The Russian American Children's Foundation (RACF), founded in 2012 as Rusfond USA, is an American children’s charity that helps Russian children with rare, often deadly diseases, receive groundbreaking American medical care before it’s too late. There are countless children in the world that need help... And many children’s charities created to help them. We want to call your attention to an American children’s charity that you may not have heard of. One that helps children, whose rare, often deadly diseases, don’t make headlines in the news. Children... Who have been abandoned by their government... By their health care system... And by other charities. CHILDREN WHO ARE DYING AT UNPRECEDENTED RATES Critical congenital heart defects, just one of many rare diseases... Kills at least 12 of these forgotten children every day. That’s 4,385 children dying unnecessarily every year. That's like the Titanic sinking... Two times. Every year. If these children had been operated on as infants... As they are in America... They would be leading normal, healthy lives. But they were born in another part of the world. Their desperate parents watch as they slowly die... All the while hoping and praying for a miracle. Mark Twain once wrote that... “The two most important days in your life are... the day you are born and the day you find out why.” For you, that day could be today... The day you help save a Russian child. We know what you might be thinking... Aren’t Russian children Vladimir Putin’s problem? Isn’t this something for the Russian government to address instead of meddling in our elections? Why don’t rich Russian oligarchs pay to help Russian kids? Besides there are lots of worthy causes right here at home in America! All common reactions… with some uncommon answers. Let’s look at each and answer other questions as well. ISN'T THIS PUTIN'S PROBLEM? You bet it is. But it’s only one out of thousands upon thousands of his problems. The sad part is... Even if it becomes his number 1 problem tomorrow… There is no solution. In Russia, the phrase “your child has a rare disease” sounds fatal to most families. NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO HELP Doctors know little about it. Hospitals don’t have the advanced technology required to help these children. Medical authorities refuse to acknowledge they're incapable of treating them. A mother asked the chief medical officer at a hospital in Russia... What can be done about her son’s rare heart condition? The chief replied, “try again for a healthy child.” For another Russian boy with a rare form of eye cancer... The “solution” is to remove his eye. That’s what happened to little Max from Russia… MAX'S PROBLEM It was 2013. The parents of one-year-old Max notice his left eye has a strange glow. At first, doctors believe it’s a cataract, but a more detailed exam shows it’s a tumor. They travel cross country for treatment to save their son… Only to find out... There's a tumor in his right eye too! Doctors remove Max’s left eye. In place of the eye, Max now has a prosthesis. But the cancer continues… Max's right eye is getting worse… The doctors give him chemo… BUT THE SITUATION IS STILL DANGEROUS The discussion in Russia turns to removing his other eye too. His parents now focus all of their efforts... To save Max’s right eye. They urgently search for help. Considered one of the best in the world for treating Max’s condition... A New York cancer center has a unique approach that... Kills the cancer cells AND saves the child’s eye. In 2014, supported by RACF, Max’s father brings his little boy to New York. Doctors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center... Save Max’s right eye. If not for them, Max would be blind. Today, Max is the same boy he was before the cancer... ...cheerful, mischievous, active. He talks a lot. He’s interested in everything. And he makes his parents happy!

About This Cause

BORN THIS WAY The world over, children are born with rare, life threatening diseases through no fault of their own or their parents. We’ve heard their heart-breaking stories… A boy born with half a heart. A girl born without ears. A child going blind. Conditions occurring randomly with no known cause. Too often there is no solution for these children. Except in America. These children become victims not only of how they were born but also victims of where they were born. THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE… Is in paying for the medical treatment. It’s expensive. The supply of technology and medications to treat rare disease in children is limited... Making them high cost. WHY DON'T RICH RUSSIAN OLIGARCHS HELP? When was the last time you heard someone ask… “How much has Bill Gates done for children with eye cancer?” “Why doesn’t Jeff Bezos pay for this child’s cancer treatment at St. Jude’s?” If these billionaires don’t publicize it themselves, how do we know what they have or haven’t done to help children with rare diseases? The short answer to why don’t rich Russian oligarchs help is that they do help. Business leaders and ordinary Russian citizens donate billions of dollars to charities in Russia. One of Russia’s largest charities, the Russian Assistance Fund, works closely with RACF. They have raised over $8,000,000 to help send 53 children to America for medical treatment. THERE’S NO MARKET FOR THESE FORGOTTEN CHILDREN As a “market” rare diseases are not big enough to gain the support and resources for discovering treatments. How often, for example, is a child born without one or both ears? According to the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford in Palo Alto, California... It happens only once every 5,000 births. A rare occurrence, but that still means… Every day somewhere in America and around the world… …a baby is born without an ear. Ask yourself, how much are your ears worth to you? Or your eyes? THIRTY PERCENT DIE BEFORE KINDERGARTEN Many rare diseases appear early in life. About 30% of children with rare diseases die before age five. Who can a child, especially a child in Russia, turn to? What are their parents supposed to do? Especially when virtually everything we hear about Russia is negative… ELECTION MEDDLING, COLLUSION, SANCTIONS… It wasn’t always this way. Russia and America were Allies in World War II and linked up in space in 1975. Even today, the United States and Russia work together on the International Space Station for the common good. BUT THERE ARE LOTS OF WORTHY CAUSES RIGHT HERE IN AMERICA... Yes! That’s why RACF supports American doctors, American hospitals, and groundbreaking American medical care. RACF also provides funds to Ronald McDonald Houses across America, to offer a home away from home for families of sick Russian children. Since 2012, RACF has supported Russian children treated at top rated children’s hospitals like Cincinnati Children’s. There, a little girl from Russia receives the first heart transplant of a Russian child on U.S. soil. KSENIA GETS A NEW HEART In 2013, RACF helps bring one-year-old Ksenia to Ohio for open-heart surgery. But she’s too far gone. A heart transplant is the only way to save her life. After two years and three months of waiting, all the while supported by RACF, she is called in. The operation lasts five hours – from two in the morning until seven. Today, Ksenia celebrates her seventh birthday. Her new heart beats loudly and strongly as she blows out the candles on her cake! They get the best doctors and nursing staff to treat their child’s condition. They get all their medications, lab tests, medical exams, anesthesia, and medical expenses paid for. They get the complete surgery necessary to cure their child’s condition. JUST LOOK AT ALL YOU ARE DOING FOR THIS CHILD... A child who had no hope. A child who faced a life of disability.
