Mission Statement

Brooklyn Poets is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization celebrating and cultivating the poets, poetry and literary heritage of Brooklyn. Our workshops, readings, open mics, retreats and other programs foster a more homegrown, close-knit, diverse community of poets and readers than what we see traditionally offered by graduate writing programs and the American literary community at large. Our community extends through the Bridge (poetsbridge.org), the world's premier poetry network connecting poets and mentors.

About This Cause

Brooklyn Poets was founded in 2012 to fill a void in the literary and cultural life of New York City and the United States as a whole by dedicating itself to celebrating Brooklyn’s importance in the history of American poetry and cultivating its ongoing vitality in the contemporary American literary landscape. We believe that with the publication of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass in 1855, Brooklyn became the true birthplace of American poetry, and we honor that tradition by offering programs and services that reflect the same values as Leaves of Grass and Brooklyn at their best: openness, inclusiveness, diversity. Our core program of small, intensive poetry workshops taught by award-winning poets in their own homes has served over 1600 students and employed over 60 teachers, and we’ve grown to host over 40 regular events per year attracting over 2500 attendees annually. In 2015 we launched the Bridge (poetsbridge.org), the world's first poetry network connecting poets and mentors, and in 2017 we published the landmark Brooklyn Poets Anthology, the first comprehensive anthology celebrating Brooklyn’s contemporary poets. In 2022, we celebrated our tenth anniversary by opening our first brick-and-mortar space at 144 Montague Street in historic Brooklyn Heights, where we were founded in 2012.
