Mission Statement
Brooklyn Poets honors the literary heritage of Brooklyn by celebrating and cultivating community and craft through a wide range of educational programs and events accessible to all—especially those marginalized by traditional literary and academic structures. Brooklyn has historically been a gateway and refuge for immigrants and other systemically marginalized groups, where differences are welcomed and celebrated. It has also been a place for writers and artists to break new ground creatively and build community. In this spirit, we seek to set the standard for inclusive, creative spaces characterized by care and rigor through our workshops, classes, events and other programs, both in person and online.
About This Cause
We offer workshops, readings, open mics and other programs that foster a more homegrown, close-knit, diverse community of poets and readers than what is traditionally offered by graduate writing programs and the American literary community at large. Since our inception, we’ve held over 350 workshops, serving 3,200+ students—including 280 fellows and 210 fellowship finalists who were able to attend for free or reduced cost. In 2022 we opened our first physical space at 144 Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights. We’re the only dedicated poetry space in the borough, and we take that responsibility seriously! In the last year we’ve held over 60 events and hosted our second-annual Poetry Festival, featuring poets like Hanif Abdurraqib, Victoria Chang, Marie Howe, Diana Khoi Nguyen, sam sax and Rowan Ricardo Phillips. We’ve had over 400 poets share their work at our open mics and showcases, offered 70 workshops to more than 600 students, including 54 fellows who took part in our workshops for free. Our community space at 144 Montague Street is open to the public five days a week, and we offer a variety of free community groups and readings in addition to our paid programming. I truly can’t emphasize enough how life-changing their work is. In the words of one of our community members: “”I remember walking out of the first class that I took with content, with poems, that really changed the trajectory of my writing career. That's truly how I felt. The prompts were so different than academia. The teaching style and the sense of community was so different… I’ve taken other coursework with other organizations just to dip my toe and see what else is out there. Nothing is like Brooklyn Poets. It's rich here.” —Starr Davis: Summer '19 Fellow, Author of AFFIDAVIT (Hanging Loose Press, 2025)
