Mission Statement

The Story Collider is dedicated to true, personal stories about science told live on stage. Since 2010, we have hosted more than 100 live shows in New York, Boston, London, and some 20 cities across the US. Our podcast has more than 3 million downloads and was named in WIRED’s 2015 "The 27 Must-Follow Feeds in the World of Science".

About This Cause

The Story Collider is dedicated to the idea that true stories, told live, are a powerful tool for expressing both the substance of science and the spirit of scientists. At the Story Collider, we believe that everyone has a story about science—a story about how science made a difference, affected them, or changed them on a personal and emotional level. We find those stories and share them on stage and on our podcast. Sometimes, it's even funny. Since 2010, we have produced 118 storytelling events in the US and UK, and our weekly podcast has been downloaded some 3 million times. The ultimate goals of our work are: 1) to produce stories that humanize science and help people see the many ways science intersects with all of our lives; and 2) to teach researchers storytelling as a way to better understand and interact with the broader culture. We know that storytelling is not typically taught in scientific training, and sometimes explicitly discouraged. We intend to change that. In addition to our live shows and weekly podcast, we also offer a variety of workshop formats for universities, scientific societies, and research groups. From hour-long keynote speeches to six-week short courses, we focus on helping scientists understand why storytelling works, how to use narrative to explain their research, and how to connect with audiences in a meaningful way. Stories are how people understand the world and our place in it, and they include both factual and emotional dimensions. It is because of that dual nature that a well-told story can bridge seemingly impossible divides and preserve ideas across vast distances and time. Research shows that, compared to other forms of communication, first-person narratives can be more successful in: • generating interest and engagement with a topic, • improving comprehension, • influencing real-world beliefs, and • persuading skeptical audiences. The Story Collider team possesses a formidable blend of academic credibility and stage experience. We have variously earned PhDs from Columbia, Stanford, UC San Diego, and Boston University, and have published peer-reviewed research in Nature, PLOS, Nuclear Physics B, The Journal of High Energy Physics, Animal Behavior, Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and F1000 Research. Two of us have been Moth GrandSLAM champions and our personal stories have been featured in The Best of RISK!, This American Life, and The Moth Radio Hour. We have written and edited for the BBC, TED.com, The Atlantic Tech, Slate, Nautilus, RadioLab, and many others. The Story Collider is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with Charity Status 170(b)(1)(A) (vi). Our Employer ID Number is 45-5546873.
