Mission Statement

Thrive Scholars (formerly known as SCS Noonan Scholars) works with high-achieving low-income students from across the country to help them get into selective colleges and graduate with the degree, skills, and experiences they need for the career they desire.

About This Cause

Thrive Scholars was founded in 2001 to address the significant unmet need within the Los Angeles area for targeted admissions counseling, academic preparation, and college support for high-achieving low-income students. After more than ten years of success in LA, the founders decided to replicate their program in Boston as a pilot program for national expansion. After achieving successful outcomes in both Boston and LA, we began serving the top underrepresented students from all across the country. Our six year-long program provides a continuum of support for our students that directly addresses the unique barriers they face to enrolling in and succeeding at selective colleges: their need for more informed college admissions advising; their inadequate academic preparation; their lack of professional mentors and experience; and their lack of access to a network for key internships and jobs. Our Scholars benefit from admissions and intensive academic preparation before college and a comprehensive set of academic, personal, social-emotional, financial, and professional supports throughout college. As high school juniors and seniors, Thrive benefit from: • Summer Academy, the cornerstone of our program, is a 6-week rigorous academic preparation program that gives students 210+ hours of instruction in college-level writing and math taught by college professors. The Academy is housed at the University of Southern California and Amherst College and is designed to offset the discrepancy in academic preparation between many low-income students and those from more affluent high schools. • College Counseling to educate students about the application and financial aid process with an emphasis on highly selective colleges. Students receive tailored guidance to ensure that they apply, gain admission to, and attend best fit, top-ranked universities. Once in college, Thrive receive: • Bridge Scholarships: four-year bridge scholarships of at least $1,000 per year • Mentorship: one-to-one volunteer mentors for support, guidance, and career exposure • Career Development: internships, jobs, career counseling, and networking support • Individual College Support: help for struggling Scholars through individual planning and accessing campus resources • Professional Network: access to an extensive internship and job network in fields such as medicine, the life sciences, law, and finance. Our network includes numerous fortune 500 corporations.
