About This Cause

The Nowzad NFP operates in both Afghanistan and Ukraine. Afghanistan: After the turbulence that has ensued since the Taliban were handed back power over Afghanistan on the 15th August 2021 the Nowzad charity has worked extremely hard to re-establish our operations in Kabul. We are extremely proud of our staff who stayed behind through what was a hellish transition period, (still to this day, desperately needed aid money is being blocked from entering the country as western leaders fail to engage in constructive dialogue with the Afghan government – in our humble opinion, it is what it is. Time to move on and move peacefully forward), to look after the donkeys and horses (plus David the cow and Jaja the goat) that were already resident in our donkey sanctuary in Kabul. Now that we are back operating and the word is spreading, we have seen many concerned locals, who thankfully never looked the other way, bringing injured dogs and cats to us for treatment. We were actually quite overwhelmed when one happy rescuer returned with flowers to thank the team for treating the dog he had brought to us. The team have been dealing with several dogs sadly suffering from rabies; which involves the dangerous operation of capturing the dog so it can be humanely PTS (there is no cure), followed by delivering a poster campaign to warn local residents to be on the lookout whilst we also notify medical practitioners should anyone in the area be bitten by a street dog. Over 1000 Afghan nationals are known to die each year from rabies. The team is expanding to cope with the workload. And after the Taliban retook power we never thought we would see the day when we were able to employ a female Afghan as a veterinarian again but we have! Sadly she may well be the last as the Afghan government have banned women from certain career paths and veterinary science is sadly one of those banned subjects. Currently our team consists of 4 male and one female veterinarian along with associated support staff. Now that we no longer have soldier companion animal rescues as part of the Nowzad mission we have moved towards supporting the working animals of Kabul; the overworked and under cared for donkeys and horses. We have had a steady stream of working animal clients, struggling with severe and often very old wounds from ill-fitting saddles or harnesses. Many horses and donkeys suffer injuries from failing down whilst navigating uneven or soft ground whilst carrying unbelievable heavy loads. Ukraine: And witnessing the illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February of 2022 and the subsequent death and destruction that followed, the Nowzad charity knew we had to act. Whilst humanitarian agencies swiftly moved to support the millions of Ukrainians forced to flee, there was limited support for the animal shelters that had no choice but to remain in place along with the courageous locals who decided to stay and continue to care for the stray dogs and cats that had become accustomed to their care, even though it meant great personal risk for the Ukrainians who stayed. Sadly we watched as other welfare groups leapt into the fray and immediately commenced transporting, on masse, dogs and cats out of Ukraine and into western Europe. We quickly realised that whilst this was done with the upmost of good intentions, it put an unsustainable pressure on animal shelters in Europe that already had their own stray dog and cat issues. With no outlet for adoptions (the UK, Germany and US to name a few, soon banned the import of dogs and cats from Ukraine, Romania and Hungary), once it was realised that most rescues had not followed the correct vaccination process. Always the threat of rabies and other diseases must be the priority. Nowzad has always maintained that supporting the animal shelters and animal welfare volunteers in Ukraine was the way forward and our mission in Ukraine reflects that. Nowzad has no clinic or kennelling facility outside of Afghanistan to be able to support any rehoming or care for Ukrainian animals that have been transported out of the country. To complement our supply chain, firstly we were required to implement a staging post in eastern Poland in Przemyśl, where all donated supplies of dog and cat food, medical supplies including vaccinations and microchips and humanitarian support for the shelter teams and volunteers, mostly based out of Kyiv, could be proceeded and packed ready to cross the border into Ukraine. A team from Nowzad travelled to Ukraine and witnessed first hand the appalling atrocities that were being carried out by the Russian military. The devastation and horror was plain to see. We also decided to address the extremely small office we had called home in the UK for the last 15 years and move to a large purpose built warehouse / office facility that could cope with the demands of storing and managing 15 tonnes of dog and cat food destined for Ukraine. Nowzad has formed a charitable fund in Ukraine; ‘Nowzad Liviv’ which currently employs two Ukrainian nationals at our warehouse situated on the outskirts of Lviv, to finalise the distribution onwards to the most needed shelters and volunteer groups within the east of the country. We desperately need your support to continue this vital animal welfare work in both Ukraine and Afghanistan - thank you!
