Mission Statement
The mission of Turn the Page KC is to mobilize our entire community to ensure children gain the literacy skills they need to create a lifetime of opportunity.
About This Cause
Turn the Page KC was founded by then Mayor Sly James in 2011 to mobilize the Greater Kansas City community to achieve reading proficiency at grade level or above by the 3rd grade for all students. While formal reading instruction happens in schools, we recognize that schools alone cannot be successful in supporting all the literacy needs of all children. Therefore, Turn the Page KC supports reading proficiency for children by focusing on access to quality early childhood learning experiences, the reduction of chronic absenteeism in schools, access to quality out-of-school-time programming. access to inclusive books We focus on equity and inclusion. Access to culturally relevant books is not equitable for children of color and children living in poverty. Children learn to read at grade level when they have a book-rich environment at home; caring adults speak to them every day; they feel included and engaged in reading through materials featuring characters who look like them; they gain awareness of reading before they start going to school. INCLUSIVE BOOK DISTRIBUTION Turn the Page KC distributes 10,000 new and inclusive children’s books each year to children and families, either through our partner organizations who provide services to parents and children or directly, through our Festivals of Reading. READ 360˚ READ 360˚ is a collective impact program focused on centering the voices of parents and families, one neighborhood at a time, to direct the resources and services from across the city that increase literacy. We partner with neighborhoods that include or are adjacent to a Housing Authority development to ensure our most marginalized families are valued, heard, and included in the larger community. Collective impact strategies help leverage the strengths of community-based partners, educational partners, literacy partners, health partners, and civic partners to help bring to life the vision that parents share to support children’s academic success and literacy. EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS’ LITERACY NETWORK The ECELN is a network of dedicated professionals who seek to further their practice of supporting early literacy and reading for children aged 0-5 and through kindergarten. The Network provides access to free inclusive resources for classroom instruction, professional development opportunities, a network of colleagues with whom to share ideas and support. As of the summer of 2022, we have 75 PreK and Kindergarten teachers enrolled in our network. We seek to double that by the end of this year and continue growth to our goal of 500.
