About This Cause

Dignity for Divas (DfD) is dedicated to addressing homelessness and housing insecurity among marginalized communities, with a focus on Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) backgrounds. Based in [City, State], DfD provides comprehensive support to women and their children who face systemic inequities and are at risk of returning to homelessness. Our current Keep the Key Initiative encompasses our three-tier platform highlighting our yearlong self-enhancing programs which include (1) Diva Duty, (2) Welcome Home Diva, and (3) Diva Dream, which collectively aim to prevent homelessness, support recovery from homelessness, and end the cycle of generational homelessness. Our organization collaborates with various local agencies to provide integrated support, distinguishing ourselves through a holistic approach that combines practical assistance with emotional and psychological support. The Problem Dignity for Divas is Solving Homelessness often leads to repeated cycles of instability, especially for women and their children. Dignity for Divas (DfD) works to break this cycle by empowering women to reclaim their dignity and secure stable housing. Research shows that prior episodes of homelessness significantly increase the risk of future homelessness, particularly when experienced in childhood. This disruption impacts children's sense of safety and normal development, making it essential to support both mothers and their children in their recovery. Nationally, women make up 29% of individuals experiencing homelessness, with single-parent households led by women being disproportionately affected. In these households, 84% are female-headed, and families of color are overrepresented in the homeless population. In Washington State, 10,124 women experienced homelessness in 2023, with the majority residing in urban areas like Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett. These women and their children, primarily from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities, face compounded challenges due to systemic inequities, socio-economic disadvantages, and a lack of access to essential resources. The affected age groups range from young children to adults, underscoring the importance of a multi-generational approach to ending homelessness. Current Programs and Organizational Relationships Dignity for Divas (DfD) operates its key programs under the "Keep the Key" initiative, designed to empower women and their children to maintain stable housing and break the cycle of homelessness: 1. Outreach Diva Duty: This program provides essential outreach services to women experiencing homelessness, offering immediate support and resources to those in need. 2. Welcome Home Diva: Focused on women who have recently secured housing, this program offers personalized case management, access to critical resources, and ongoing support to ensure participants maintain their housing and build a stable life. 3. Diva Dream Program: Through workshops and classes centered on life skills, wellness, and personal development, this program helps women build the confidence and skills needed to thrive in stable housing. Dignity for Divas operates with a dedicated team of four full-time staff members and 21 volunteers. The organization maintains strong relationships, both formal and informal, with 19 nonprofit organizations that serve the same population. These partnerships are crucial in providing a comprehensive support network, with DfD’s unique holistic, wraparound services complementing the efforts of its partners. DfD stands out as the only organization in Washington State offering a full year of holistic wraparound services, which has led to 72% of program participants maintaining housing for two years. By collaborating with other organizations and delivering these distinctive services, DfD ensures that participants receive the comprehensive support needed to sustain stability and achieve long-term success.
