Mission Statement
The Mobile Film Classroom strives to increase diversity in the fields of media, entertainment, and technology through Media Arts & Filmmaking training for LA's underserved youth and their teachers.
About This Cause
MFC teaches students from economically disadvantaged areas how to tell their stories via filmmaking. Because our students lack basic access to technology and skilled instructors, we bring the classroom to them. Our vehicle is equipped with iMac workstations, cameras, microphones, video and audio editing software, sound recording booths and DVD production equipment. Instructors guide students through the digital media creation process teaching them the fundamentals of film production, as they create their own, unique video projects. We serve students in schools, foster care homes, special needs camps, and libraries throughout Los Angeles. Students who lack basic access to technology and arts education are placed at a huge disadvantage to their more affluent peers. A 2012 study by The National Endowment for the Arts found that kids who create art are five times more likely to graduate from high school than their peers who do not. The intent of our curriculum is not only to reach students on a creative level, but also to provide them with life skills and job training they might otherwise not receive. We believe that filmmaking accomplishes this by teaching students critical thinking, collaboration, communication, time management and problem solving skills they will use in college and the workforce. We plan to expand to multiple vehicles with a bigger menu of programs that encompass all of digital media, coding and graphic design. Our program has the potential to be replicated in other communities through “Social Franchising.” However, our main goal is to expand our current capacity in the Los Angeles area. We also intend to expand our programs that do not require the Mobile Classroom vehicle. Some schools already have good computer labs and just need camera equipment, lighting kits and audio. A portion of the capital budget includes creating portable “kits” to empower our instructors to “Grab and Go” to these locations.
