Mission Statement
The Houston ToolBank serves community-based organizations by providing tools, equipment & expertise to empower their most ambitious goals. When we put high-quality tools in the hands of volunteers, our members are able to do more for our community – whether through home repair, days of service or charitable events. Ultimately, our mission is to make nonprofits and volunteers not just dream bigger, but do more.
About This Cause
Since opening our doors in late 2014, the ToolBank has consistently increased our member organizations’ capacity to make a difference. Over the past six years, the Houston Community ToolBank has equipped more than 240,000 volunteers with tools to complete over 19,000 projects, and given a returned value of more than $20 million back into the community. We have supported disaster response efforts throughout Texas; in the years following Hurricane Harvey, the ToolBank lent out over $7 million worth of free tools for relief-related efforts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we built an inventory of safety items - touchless thermometers, plexiglass barriers, and hand sanitizing stations - to help keep nonprofit staff and volunteer safer as they served their neighbors. And, we became a hub for PPE distribution - giving out of 200,000 masks, gloves and bottles of hand sanitizer throughout 2020. And of course, outside of disaster, our partners are always using our tools to better their community. With a warehouse over 298 different kinds of tools and equipment types, and over 20,000 items, the ToolBank can support projects large and small. A group of 200 parents and teachers can build a new playground in a single day. A man working to maintain a historic African American cemetery can borrow our lawn mowers and weed eaters to maintain the green space. An eagle scout can install a beach volleyball court with a small team of parents and fellow scouts. A group of skilled contractors can join with their church to build a wheelchair ramp for an elderly member. And these are just a few examples of the thousands of projects that have made use of ToolBank tools. The Houston Community ToolBank opened its doors in late 2014. The Houston ToolBank is an affiliate of ToolBank USA, the Atlanta-based parent organization of the new national network of ToolBanks. The Houston ToolBank is modeled after the highly successful Atlanta Community ToolBank, which has served greater Atlanta’s not-for-profit sector for more than 25 years. Now, we are a proud affiliate amongst six other ToolBanks in other urban centers all across America, each of whom is working to empower community organizations. While we may not be on the front lines, everyday our tools allow other inspiring organizations to do vital work in and around Houston. We are Tools for Hope.
