About This Cause
The GreenAllies mission is to empower and support students to innovate and lead environmental sustainability efforts. In February, students from across the region will be gathering at Swarthmore College to participate in our college networking conference. The student organizers are looking for like-minded businesses to help sponsor this event – the largest of its kind in the region. The GreenAllies mission is to empower and support students to innovate and lead environmental sustainability efforts. We envision a world where students lead the way to a more livable future by providing student leadership opportunities through service programs that promote a healthier, more sustainable community. We are a rapidly growing organization trying to keep pace with a rapidly growing demand for our services. GreenAllies is looking to create the next generation of community leaders by creating moments for student to thrive. Whether it is by creating community programming led by students or developing a network where students can share best practices, GreenAllies is the one resource they can go to for support and assistance. We are backed by a strong Board of Directors looking to drive environmental innovation. We organized a national network of motivated and committed college students and community members willing to volunteer, advise and support student projects throughout the region and across the country. Our impact is growing! Below are just a few of our recent accomplishments: Locally The Althouse Arboretum, GreenAllies’ outdoor education and community center staffed and run by trained students, has seen a 400% increase in use in the last two years. Our student staff and internship program is teaching leadership skills while providing free and low-cost outdoor education services to children throughout the region. Over just this past year, staff and students have: 1. Led over 50 creative and unique community programs, with nearly 40% of them free of cost 2. Impacted nearly 4,000 children and adults through our community programming. 3. Had more than 300 student leaders and volunteers plan, organize and run the community programming 4. Provided free and low-cost outdoor summer camps, hikes, and outdoor education programs to over 500 children from underserved communities. 5. Has partnered with other schools and organizations, including Cornell University, to create a plan on how to protect our local natural areas. Regionally 1. GreenAllies sponsors leadership training conferences, webinars and environmental summits for more than 400 high school and college students every year. 2. Our expanded training of college students has resulted in a partnership with EfS (Education for Sustainability), a National Science Foundation sponsored program run by professors from Bryn Mawr College, West Chester University, and Community College of Philadelphia. The goal is to assist schools in the Philadelphia School District promote environmental sustainability in their schools. 3. Partnered with the Franklin Institute and National Geographic CUSP programs to create opportunities for students to assist regional schools 4. Created the GreenAllies Network where students can share best practices and learn from each other's successful sustainability projects, reaching more than 30 schools. 5. College Networking Conference attendance topped 200 students from 23 different school. 6. Testimonials GreenAllies has given me the opportunity to turn my own ideas into reality. Their support enhanced my leadership skills as well as my confidence. I would never have had this chance without them. - student The GreenAllies Conference was a great experience. I left feeling empowered and inspired. - student GreenAllies brought together a group of eco-minded, passionate people who inspired me to continue learning about and serving the environment. - student “Sustainability is an approach to look at the world, a critical way to understand and engage with the world, and the method by which we can change that world.” Ken Hamilton, GreenAllies Executive Director The idea started almost twenty years ago when I formed a high school environmental group called SAVE (Students Against Violating the Earth) where students could learn to become sustainability leaders in their community. The formula of connecting communities to the students at the high school became a tremendous motivator for success. Amazing results occurred when students were empowered to be the change-makers and leaders in the community. The SAVE group grew into a powerful and well-known student-run organization that consistently boasted a membership of over 250 students – one out of every eight students in school. The group has been recognized with several national awards and is a model program whose activities have been replicated in other schools throughout the region. As the successes mounted, and the requests from other schools multiplied, it became apparent that there was a need to form an organization dedicated to helping schools and youth organizations replicate the activities of SAVE. Discussions began on creating a foundation with a mission to promote sustainability by connecting students to their communities. A Board of Directors, consisting of former SAVE members and like-minded individuals, was created and the 501(c)3 SAVE Alliance Foundation was born. Soon after incorporation, one of the Board members came forward with a plan to preserve a family property near Pottstown, Pennsylvania and turn it into a special destination for environmental education, one which allows for student experimentation and idea development. This became the Foundation’s first priority. We formed a unique partnership with the local township to preserve the land through their Open Space program and link it by trail to other open space lands, and create a one-of-a-kind environmental education center. During the first half of 2014, the SAVE Alliance Foundation formed a coalition of local students, community members, township officials, and SAVE Alliance Advisers to create a master plan for what is now known as the Althouse Arboretum. Community activities have become commonplace, making the Althouse Arboretum a model student-led sustainability project. In just a few short years, The SAVE Alliance Foundation trademarked the name GreenAllies and we began to expand our work across Pennsylvania and throughout the country. We are empowering a new generation of leaders that will take us to a more sustainable future. Here a few recent facts from our only our second year of operation (2016):
