Mission Statement
Akropolis Quintet, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization of five members performing classical chamber music on wind instruments who began performing together in 2009. Today, Akropolis exists to a) progress and sustain classical music in communities around the United States, and b) educate the next generation of musicians to ensure that a vibrant culture of art persists in future generations.
About This Cause
Akropolis Quintet, Inc. was founded in 2009 at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI) as a classical chamber music quintet of five woodwind instruments - oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon. After winning several national awards for chamber music performance and educational outreach, Akropolis became a full-time touring ensemble, educator, and community advocate for the arts. Comprised of Matthew Landry (saxophone and Executive Director), Kari Dion (clarinet and Marketing Director and board secretary), as well as Tim Gocklin (oboe), Andrew Koeppe (bass clarinet), and Ryan Reynolds (bassoon), serving as co-Artistic Directors, Akropolis now has three strategic goals: 1. Music performance and community engagement 2. Educational outreach 3. New music advocacy Specifically, Akropolis aims to enhance its educational outreach efforts, from kindergarten through conservatory, including its new collegiate focused career advancement program, Akropolis WORKS, centered upon creative entrepreneurship and generating sustainable career options for future musicians. Akropolis aims to deepen its commitment to community engagement with more programs at libraries, churches, art museums, area businesses, and other community centers. Akropolis aims to strengthen its performances and new music advocacy, including new commissions, studio releases, video production, and new additions to Akropolis' growing sheet music catalog — the Akropolis Collection. Akropolis performs 30-40 full-length concerts per year on series large and small around the United States, and conducts 30-40 additional engagements per year at community centers ranging from churches and libraries to museums and senior centers. Akropolis also delivers engaging and transforming outreach for K-12 students. In 2015 Akropolis won the Fischoff Educator award for its commitment to education, and it has conducted two week-long education tours, each reaching several thousand students at 19 schools in Detroit, MI and South Bend, IN. Akropolis advocates for new classical music which is accessible, vibrant, and long-lasting. To this end, Akropolis... 1. Publishes new reed quintet sheet music by living composers as well as arrangements of older works for reed quintet. 2. Curates a YouTube Web Premiere series which showcases new reed quintet works to a dedicated online audience. 3.
