Mission Statement

Canticle Farm is an interracial, intergenerational, interfaith platform for The Great Turning – the planetary shift from an industrial-growth society to a life-sustaining society – one heart, one home, one block at a time.

About This Cause

A Short History: Canticle Farm is an interracial, intergenerational, interfaith platform for The Great Turning – the planetary shift from an industrial-growth society to a life-sustaining society – one heart, one home, one block at a time. Consisting of six houses in the Fruitvale of Oakland, with gardens interconnected by removing fences, the project was founded in 2010 by Anne Symens-Bucher, a fifth-generation resident of this neighborhood. Canticle Farm’s work is both local and global, hosting programs that meet the needs of both this neighborhood (living on the frontlines of mass incarceration, gentrification, deportation, urban decay and more) and others that work to support national and global social and environmental justice movements. Local work at Canticle Farm includes a Spanish-speaking natural healing class that runs every other weekend, an open community meal offered as a gift every Tuesday evening, an interfaith spiritual service open to all every Sunday, organizing disaster preparedness workshops, hosting a support group for single mothers of color and many school visits and volunteer days at our urban organic demonstration garden. Social movement work includes stewarding a house that supports men who have been paroled from life sentences to be leaders and speakers in restorative justice, hosting retreats and meetings for environmental and social justice organizations, being home to the Beehive Design Collective’s California poster process, stewarding another house that supports young activists to do their soul work in the world, and by hosting activists as short term guests from all over the world.
