About This Cause

IHHELPP is a 501c3 public foundation that was officially established on November 19, 2012 in Provo, Utah. It focuses on improving 4 determinants of quality of life-health, housing, education, and livelihood- among the poor in the Philippines. The foundation was borne out of sincere gratitude for the ample opportunities experienced in the United States and driven by a simple desire to give back and share with those who are less fortunate in the Philippines. From school and hygiene supplies regularly brought back during Philippine visits and distributed in public elementary schools, such simple efforts evolved into creating a charitable foundation formed by friends and associates who share the same vision and values of helping the poor and needy children and families. Vision: Our vision is an equitable and level playing field for the poor who are empowered with good health practices, live in affordable, high-quality disaster-resilient housing, with access to relevant education, and engaged in sustainable livelihood. Core Values: Self Reliance, Integrity, Responsibility, Industry, Dignity, Competence, Faith Structure: The foundation is comprised of board members and volunteers who all participate on a voluntary basis and do not receive any remuneration for their time and efforts. The board members come from diverse professional backgrounds and locations and the volunteers are mostly students and alumni from Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus and public high school students in the Philippines. Collectively they comprise a formidable group of committed and engaged individuals whose hearts and minds are passionately vested in helping indigent Filipino individuals and families regardless of faith and gender. Charity Projects: Charity undertakings are driven two ways: one can be through a donor's request for a specific project in a particular location where 100% of the donor's funds are channeled towards successful completion. The other is when the foundation assesses a need and allocates its own funds to carry out a humanitarian project to address such need. In both approaches, a livelihood program is created for those who will participate in the undertaking as they are paid for their work with prevailing wages, plus meal benefits. Tax-deductible donations are sincerely welcomed from individuals, families and private companies who desire to make IHHELPP as their vehicle of helping those in need in the Philippines. Outcomes are measured by the successful completion of the project, meeting the budgetary allowance, achieving the objectives of the project, and engagement of all stakeholders in the process. Programs and Activities: Health and Wellness-Most recently, IHHELPP donated food items to at least 80 indigent families in 2 communities in Negros Occidental and Antipolo, Rizal. The foundation also donated personal protective equipments (PPEs) to frontliners at Fabella Maternity Hospital, a public hospital catering to poor women and families. IHHELPP also distributed hygiene supplies to typhoon and fire victims and elementary school children in various areas in northern Luzon, conducted community-based educational sessions about hygiene (Zambales), and built an eye clinic out-patient (Pangasinan). IHHELPP has built communal bathrooms situated in public elementary schools that severely lack functional toilets and have impacted health and hygiene among the children in the communities. Several communal bathroom facilities were built in 4 elementary schools (Bicol) using compressed earth blocks (CEBs) structured for disaster-resilience. There were 3 major bathroom renovations completed in Negros Occidental, one bathroom construction in a public college in San Remigio, Cebu, and 6 bathroom/wash area facilities in Bohol. Each bathroom facility has 2 to 8 toilets and separate wash area outside, aside from the faucet and pail inside the toilet. IHHELPP’s immediate project is to build a senior high school and a technical/entrepreneurship school to help the poor gain construction and business skills for marketable livelihood and fill the critical demand for housing in the Philippines. Housing- IHHELPP’s major housing projects centered on building social housing in the resettlement site for squatters in Metro Manila by building 2 concrete homes in Antipolo Resettlement Site. IHHELPP also piloted a 2-story disaster-resilient house using structural insulated panels (SIPS), in Tacloban, Leyte which was heavily devastated by typhoon Yolanda. This is the first disaster-resilient housing in the Philippines. Education-IHHELPP distributed school supplies to public elementary schools in poor communities (northern Luzon, Visayas); created the Classroom Sponsorship Program where businesses donate funds to buy needed supplies and renovate classrooms. Livelihood: IHHELPP completed bathroom projects which created livelihood programs in construction. Other programs included baking, sewing, boating, and fishing in various communities. Communication: Website: www.ihhelpp.org Newsletter: IHHELPP published a monthly newsletter created by the Journalism class of Cristo Rey High School in Tarlac, Philippines. The Advisor is a BYU-Hawaii graduate who currently teaches in the public high school. The same class also administers the foundation’s website.
