Mission Statement
Our Mission: Serving our community while teaching the art of bicycle repair.
About This Cause
The Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange (SVBE) began in 1993 repairing bicycles for clients of the Mountain View Community Services Agency (MVCSA). We now operate our own 501(c)(3) non-profit and operate a community bike shop in Palo Alto, CA. We donate bicycles, helmets and locks to more than a dozen organizations throughout Silicon Valley, California; these organizations include social service organizations such as Sunday Friends, the Sunnyvale Community Services Agency, and Samaritan House. Currently, the SVBE also donates bikes to the Menlo Park Veteran’s Administration Hospital. In 2021 we donated over 850 bicycles. Throughout its operation, SVBE has maintained a strong educational component, teaching bicycle repair skills to hundreds of new apprentices each year while refurbishing bikes to donate to charity. We provide professional tools, an extensive inventory of parts and mentoring in an environment designed to make bike repair a productive and enjoyable learning experience. SVBE accepts volunteers at our skills sharing events and also hosts volunteer groups from a range of service organizations and hosts corporate volunteer team building events.
