Mission Statement

Imagine a world in which every single person shares in the sum of all medical knowledge. That is what we're doing.

About This Cause

Wiki Project Med Foundation (Wiki Med Foundation, Inc.), is a diverse global group of dedicated Wikipedia editors, public health professionals, medical students, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and educators using Wikipedia to improve public health around the world. We use Wikipedia's powerful and accessible platform to educate people across borders about the medical conditions about which they so often lack free and understandable information . In many countries, Wikipedia *is* the only free, public, open, and non-clinical source of reliable medical information. We focus our efforts on improving the accuracy, completeness, neutrality, and readability of Wikipedia content generally--and then translate it into dozens of less commonly spoken languages around the world. This work is of tremendous importance: during the 2015 Ebola outbreak, Wikipedia was the *most viewed* source online *in the areas affected by the disease*. Wikipedia's nearly tens of thousands of medical articles are viewed more than 200 million times each month. This is more than the WHO, NIH, WebMD, or any other online resource. We work with international ngo's such as the World Health Organization, U.S. National Institute of Health, Cancer Research UK, Translators without Borders, and others who care that the next billion people coming online find the essential facts about their bodies and the diseases that afflict their communities. We also partner with leading medical schools to help the next generation of doctors become global digital citizens who can contribute to a shared storehouse of free knowledge, while also learning how to communicate their expertise to broad publics.
