Mission Statement

NB Housing Partners advocates for and provides supportive housing in the New Braunfels area for people experiencing housing instability. We act as a catalyst to create sustainable solutions across the affordable housing spectrum. Our tag line is "Bringing our neighbors closer to home."

About This Cause

NB Housing Partners was established as a 501©3 non-profit organization by the McKenna Foundation in 2013 to explore and develop solutions for issues related to housing instability and the lack of an adequate amount of affordable housing options in the community. In 2014, the agency purchased land which was given to the New Braunfels Food Bank to build an operating site in the community and to develop an apartment complex for families at or below 200% of the poverty line. The housing crunch sometimes effectively means that no viable housing is available for low- or no-income residents. By providing crisis housing (shelter) along with programs aimed at providing life skills resources, NB Housing Partners seeks to offer hope and steps toward housing for displaced individuals and families. Thus, the agency created crisis housing in the form of a shelter and support services for adults experiencing homelessness, the agency's first venture into providing direct services, which began operations on February 1, 2021. Since 2021, we have expanded services to reduce the burden on individuals in their journey from homelessness to housing. We have implemented a coordinated entry process to capture an individual's circumstances in a secure system that can be shared with other agencies with the individual's permission; this process reduces the individual's burden of retelling their story or traveling to multiple places to seek help and enhances communication between community agencies who can provide assistance. In late 2021, we embarked on a holistic approach with several partner agencies to assist unhoused individuals on their journey to housing, including addressing root factors that led to a person's homelessness and well as support in obtaining and maintaining housing. In 2023, we added a multi-agency collaboration of street outreach services to engage with unhoused individuals and connect then to healthcare, housing, or other resources. We are currently working to expand our housing capacity through additional shelter beds and transitional housing rooms, as well as future plans for a permanent, supportive housing community. Current Programs/Services* NB Housing Partners provides the following services to ensure a coordinate system of care to address and end homelessness for individuals served: 1. *HOME (Health Outreach Multidisciplinary Engagement) Team- We know that the longer someone is unhoused, the harder the journey back to housing becomes. Additionally, there are negative impacts to physical health, mental health, and a person’s sense of safety and wellbeing. Proactively addressing homelessness reduces the exorbitant expense of time and money reacting to homelessness through law enforcement, jail time, and courts as well as uncompensated emergency care services and hospitalizations. The HOME Team identifies and tracks encampments by regularly reaching out to unhoused individuals, offering medical care, behavioral healthcare, shelter and safety, and pathways to employment and housing. Conducted in conjunction with Hill Country MHDD and Acacia Medical Mission. 2. Homelessness Diversion and Coordinated Entry: Homelessness diversion guides consumers in crisis and connects with family members, landlords, or other local community resources to avoid homelessness whenever possible. When not possible, Coordinated Entry services are initiated as a secure method for gathering and sharing information between community agencies to help consumers navigate their way to sustainable housing solutions. 3. First Footing Program * Shelter: When no other housing opportunities are viable, the agency provides a 24-hour supervised low-barrier congregate shelter for up to 42 adults at a time. The shelter provides a safe place to stay, basic needs, access to medical and behavioral healthcare, food (Provided by Salvation Army and volunteers), transportation, laundry services, and solution-oriented activities focused on housing goals. * Targeted Case Management & Linkages: Program personnel help consumers develop and follow plans toward housing stability. Program activities typically include employment readiness guidance, identification document recovery, housing navigation, and transportation. Linkages and financial support when needed address medical, dental, or behavioral health issues that threaten housing goals. Notably, the mental health authority provides services at the shelter location to increase service engagement. 4. Next Step Program - Rapid Rehousing: The program assists with housing searches, financial literacy skills, housing start-up costs, rental and utility assistance, and ongoing case management for up to one year after housed to ensure housing sustainability. This program is a collaboration with Crisis Center of Comal County and Hill Country MHDD. 5. Pathways Village The program currently provides transitional housing for up to 6 individuals who are working through overcoming obstacles to permanent housing. The agency has also planned a housing development that provides housing for 40-45 individuals; construction will begin in the next 2-3 years.
