Mission Statement

Denver Food Rescue is a health equity organization in Denver, Colorado. We believe everyone has a right to fresh and whole fruits and vegetables. We seek to eliminate barriers to healthy food by empowering communities to take action in the distribution of food in their neighborhoods.

About This Cause

Denver Food Rescue (DFR) is a nonprofit organization focused on improving health equity outcomes for low-income families and individuals by increasing access to healthy food in a resident driven and culturally appropriate way. Predominantly, DFR focuses on delivering free produce to community driven, hyperlocal distribution programs. This model was created in response to the realization that low-income neighborhoods in Denver are not only lacking many healthy food retail options, but are also devoid of many emergency food assistance resources such as food pantries. Most food pantries are located in Central Denver, and are not perceived as culturally relevant or empowering. DFR partners with community based organizations to enhance their ability to distribute healthy food. This way, programs can be tailored by the community to meet the specific needs of an area, are more empowering because the community runs them. DFR also employs a low cost, bicycle based delivery model, which allows us to do hyperlocal, direct, and immediate distribution, drastically lowering the amount of time elapsed before food is delivered to families, highly increasing the amount of healthy, fresh produce we are able to provide relative to other food rescuers/food redistributors/food banks.
