Mission Statement
Culture For One transforms the lives of New York City children in foster care through the power of the arts. We provide opportunities to inspire their creativity, stimulate their intellect, and introduce them to broader possibilities for their future. Our cultural excursions, creative workshops, art scholarships, and one to one mentoring nurture big dreams and encourage higher education and career planning. Through exposure to the arts and positive role models we help these most at-risk youth build confidence, acquire life skills, and identify new interests, as well as improve their academic performance. Culture For One’s programs deliver sources of motivation that young people need to thrive … not just survive.
About This Cause
Culture For One’s mission is to improve the lives of youth in NYC’s foster care system through the power of the arts. We are the only non-profit in New York City that is devoted solely to ensuring that youth in foster care have access to arts and cultural programming. We meet a critical gap in child welfare services: while the arts are known to promote healthy growth across all domains and at every developmental stage, they are rarely available to children in foster care. A great deal of research shows that participating in the arts improves critical thinking skills, builds empathy, enhances positive self-expression, and promotes educational attainment. Our four programs Creative Arts Workshops, Cultural Excursions, Arts Scholarships, and Family ArTogether are opportunities for the youth to develop an interest and skills in the arts and, equally important, develop new life-skills. Another important component of all our programs are the mentorship bonds that form between the youth and CFO staff and teaching artists. Our staff and teaching artists are caring adults invested in each youth’s well-being. Over time, some youth look to the adults for guidance, counsel, and for additional opportunities for growth. It is especially rewarding when the mentor-mentee bond strengthens and persists even when the youth ages out of our programs and care.
