Mission Statement

PEN PARENTIS HELPS WRITERS STAY ON CREATIVE TRACK & FINISH WRITING PROJECTS AFTER HAVING KIDS.

About This Cause

Our motto is "parenting done, write." Pen Parentis, Ltd, is a Guidestar, Platinum-level nonprofit that provides ONLINE resources to writers who are also parents, encouraging the production of creative written work of professional standard by these writers, fostering supportive local communities of writer-parents, and providing educational, creative, and professional support through outreach activities to this community. --we run inspiring literary salons featuring the vast diversity of excellent creative work by established authors that are parents, allowing writers everywhere to gain inspiration from famous authors who also have kids like Jennifer Egan, Victor La Valle, Tina Chang, Kelly Link, Min Jin Lee, and hundreds of other successful, award-winning and critically acclaimed authors. --we sponsor an annual writing fellowship to encourage new creative work by new parents, now funded by The de Groot Foundation and supported by New York State Council on the Arts --our new CYCLE OF SUPPORT promotes dedication and creativity by running accountability workshops, offering classes, and maintaining a supportive online community of writer-parents. This program is newly supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. Our weekly writer-parent meetups are a data-proven model that encourages the production of new written work of professional quality. Our board is a dynamic, multi-racial mix of women. In furtherance of charitable and educational purposes: a) Pen Parentis hosts critically acclaimed literary salons (formerly in-person in Manhattan, now online) to provide a monthly platform for authors who are parents to present new works. While creating these intimate experiences with their readers, the events also prove by example that having children does not have to arrest your literary career. More than 300 famous authors encompassing all writing genres from science fiction to choral music--and including Lambda Award winning poets and National Book Award winners--have told their stories of life-work balance. b) Pen Parentis sponsors an annual fellowship to encourage the creation of new written works by authors who are parents with at least one child under 10yrs old c) Pen Parentis hosts and moderates a website and groups on various online networking sites to feature parenting and writing resources and create forums for a national community of authors who are parents d) Pen Parentis presents pop-up community building, parenting, and creativity workshops and events e) Pen Parentis provides consultation and resources to individuals and industry groups to address issues that affect authors who are parents f) Pen Parentis advocates for authors who are parents in print and other media. Pen Parentis, Ltd, is a federally recognized 501c3 not-for-profit corporation headquartered in New York City with a reach that extends nationally and to all English-speakers globally through the internet.
