Mission Statement
The TAG Parent-Teacher Association, TAG PTA Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization designed to support and expand curricular and enrichment options for students at TAG Young Scholars, a K-8 citywide gifted and talented public school in East Harlem, NY. The PTA partners with parents, teachers, and administrators to identify areas in which it can make the greatest difference; researches methods of meeting those needs; and seeks direct funding and grants to pay for them. It also monitors existing programs to ensure it meets the expectations of parents and the school. Founded in 1989, and designated a “Gifted and Talented” (G&T) School in 2004, the Talented and Gifted School for Young Scholars (TAG) is the most culturally and economically diverse of New York City’s (NYC’s) five citywide G&T schools, serving grades K-8.
About This Cause
TAG Young Scholars has the most diverse student body of NYC’s citywide G&T programs. Of TAG’s 530 students, 34% are Black, 23% Hispanic, 29% Asian, 4% White, and 12% other. 52% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. In spite of TAG’s vital mission to serve academically gifted children of all backgrounds, and the economic need of many TAG families, the school falls just under the 60% threshold that would make it eligible for “No Child Left Behind” funding, effectively penalizing its students for their potential. A REMARKABLE TRACK RECORD: • The economic challenges notwithstanding, TAG received an overall grade of “A” from the NYC Department of Education in its most recent progress report. • In fall 2013 TAG was the recipient of the Blackboard Award for Outstanding Elementary and Middle School. • TAG was recognized by Mayor Bloomberg as one of the top 22 schools in NY State. • TAG has successfully piloted the use of new technology in the 3rd and 4th grades to facilitate tailored instruction at scale, allowing individuals in large classes to learn the material at their own pace and further pursue avenues of particular interest. Following the pilot’s implementation, results of the NY State math exam improved. In 2012, TAG’s 3rd graders had the second highest NY State math scores in New York City.
