Cristo Rey empowers students from underserved communities in San José to be men and women for others who are prepared spiritually, academically, and professionally to complete college and who will become accomplished leaders committed to a lifelong pursuit of learning, faith, and justice.
About This Cause
Since opening our doors in 2014, Cristo Rey San José (CRSJ) works to ensure every graduate is able to reach and thrive in college, and beyond. Our school supports low-income, minority students through every step of their educational journey because most are the first college-bound members of their families. Our vision is to close the achievement gap by providing transformative educational opportunities and work experiences for youth from under-resourced backgrounds to fully realize their educational and professional potential. Our educational model is based in the Ignatian Jesuit concept of “cura personalis” or “caring for the whole person”. Each student receives a well-rounded educational experience that includes personalized learning, Corporate Work Study, health and wellness, mental health services, college counseling, and support throughout college. By addressing individuals’ unique needs, our students have the opportunity to excel in high school, thrive in college, and become successful adults who break the cycle of inequity. This school year, Cristo Rey San José’s approximately 420 students are excelling in high school and enrolling in college. CRSJ serves high school students ages 14 -18 from low-income, under-resourced households in East San José, California. Our diverse and vibrant student body reflects the cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic characteristics of East San José. Of our students, the great majority are Latino, speak a language other than English at home, and will be part of the first-generation college students in their families. These students and their families are extremely dedicated to succeeding academically and professionally.
