Mission Statement
The Digital Citizen Fund, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in New York City. The Digital Citizen Fund helps girls and women in developing countries gain access to technology, virtually connect with others across the world, and obtain necessary skills to succeed in today’s expanding global market. To accomplish this, the Digital Citizen Fund has built eleven Internet Training Centers and two stand-alone media centers in partnership with MTI (presently known as Bitlanders) and the Afghan Citadel. Through this collaboration, we have successfully trained over 8,000 young women in Kabul and Herat. We have recently expanded operations in Mexico as part of our effort to provide better opportunities for girls and women around the world. We are ready to scale our highly successful model to other countries as funding becomes available.
About This Cause
The majority of girls and women in developing countries such as Afghanistan still do not have access to the Internet. For these girls and women who are in the prime of their formative and creative years, the Internet symbolizes a world of opportunity for them. More importantly the Internet represents an ideal platform for learning new skills that will empower them to become more independent and self-sufficient during the Internet era. Digital Citizen Fund (DCF) is a 501c3 non-profit organization headquartered in New York, NY. Our mission is to empower women and children through digital literacy, financial literacy ,positively inspiring and connecting them to a world beyond their borders. Since 2012, we have worked to encourage students of all ages to be active learners in the world of technology and empower them to create sustainable income opportunities for themselves and their families. . To date, DCF IT Centers have graduated and provided 16000 women in Afghanistan with employable skills for engaging in Afghanistan’s growing IT Sector and giving accessibility for girls to attend classes, as girls are not otherwise easily permitted to leave the home. The most opportune time to connect to and empower women in Afghanistan is during her high school years, before she is married. Many families now allow their daughters to attend secondary school, but fewer are accepting of university studies or employment outside of the home once girls graduate high school, favoring marriage instead. DCF’s IT Centers create a pipeline that will provide high school girls with essential digital literacy and financial skills, while exposing them to the opportunities and role models to create for them as the next generation of female leaders. Our Goal 1. Create Digital Citizens that are capable and confident in their voice. 2. Empower women and children in developing countries to establish sustainable economic livelihoods. 3. Encourage personal global connectivity to inspire and raise cultural awareness 4. Provide safe, accessible environments for individual and cultural expression. Technology can support human talent to tackle the urgent social needs of women throughout Afghanistan and globally. Providing underserved populations with a pathway to digital literacy, sustainability, and community building can transform the societies in which they live for the better.
