About This Cause

Neema Village Tanzania, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) based in Temple, Texas, USA. It supports Neema Village in Arusha, Tanzania, Africa which operates under the registered NGO Neema Village Tanzania, Inc. in Tanzania. Neema Village is a place of rescue & hope for women & children in and around Arusha, Tanzania. It began in 2012 as a rescue center for abandoned, orphaned, and at-risk infants. Tanzania's high maternal mortality rate orphans many babies. Grieving fathers have brought infants who they cannot afford formula for. Thankfully, these children are able to return home to their fathers or other extended family when they are toddlers and Neema Village assists with food and education for these children if necessary. Neema Village does not believe that a child should be brought up in an institution. It is certified by the government of Tanzania and works closely with social services to find Tanzanian adoptive parents for those children eligible to be adopted. Poverty causes many infants to be abandoned by their mothers soon after giving birth. In 2017 Neema Village began a program called Mothers Against Poverty (MAP) to empower women to develop a business in order to support their children. Women are assisted in developing a business plan, instructed in finance and record keeping, and are then given funds to start a business. The MAP program will assist them in evaluating and restructuring their business if necessary to help their business become successful. In 2021 the Save the Mother's program was started to address some of the issues related to birth. Many of the women in the MAP program have children with Cerebral Palsy and are abandoned by their husbands who do not realize this is a birth trauma using crude forceps rather than a genetic problem due to infidelity. This program teaches safe birth practices using an anatomical manikin of a pregnant woman to educate the "birthers" in outlying villages. While the techniques taught cannot save all of the mothers and babies during birth, the reports given by the village birthing attendants to the director of the program, indicate that many women and babies have been saved by this education. In 2022, Neema began to drill water wells in outlying villages who did not have access to clean water. In 2023, an apprentice trade program was started for widowed fathers of the children at Neema Village so they will be able to support their child when the child is old enough to go home with the father.
