Mission Statement
The Somali Museum of Minnesota is the home of Somali culture in Minnesota. Devoted to preserving and advancing Somali traditional culture and art, the Somali Museum builds bridges between communities and builds a healthy future for Somali-Americans by celebrating Somalia's rich cultural heritage.
About This Cause
The Somali Museum of Minnesota is the only institution in North America devoted to preserving traditional Somali culture and art. More than a museum in the traditional sense, the Somali Museum’s mission is to build hope and vitality in the Somali-American community through a full-scale cultural revival. Many community members worry that elders and youth suffer from increasing isolation and a weakening community support network. Although many Somalis have lost their knowledge of traditional lifeways, the Somali Museum creates a platform for Somali-Americans and non-Somalis of all backgrounds to engage their heritage, build relationships with the environment, and cultivate connections through collective learning. Minneapolis is home to the largest population of Somali immigrants and refugees in the United States, with an estimated population of 70,000 people. The Somali Museum serves as a singular meeting place for this community to work together to preserve its heritage, and offers Minnesota’s premier resources for community building through cultural education. Displaying an unrivaled collection of 700 cultural artifacts, presenting community celebrations, and offering workshops in poetry, storytelling, and traditional crafts, the Somali Museum offers immersive cultural programs for Somali-Americans and non-Somalis alike. Further, the Somali Museum builds channels for economic empowerment for Somali traditional artists, and uses cultural heritage as a tool to diminish harmful prejudice and misunderstanding.
