Mission Statement
Adaptive Together & Thrive! Adaptive Physical Education’s mission is to maintain and improve the health and well-being of adults and seniors of all abilities, welcoming those with physical disabilities or significant health limitations by offering a vibrant fitness gym and programs adapted to meet each member’s individual needs. Located in the heart of Redwood City for nearly 40 years, we offer life-changing fitness programs in a welcoming community atmosphere.
About This Cause
Our members are those that traditional fitness gyms leave behind because of lack of program appropriateness or instructor qualification. Our instructors and staff are experts in adapted fitness, gerontology, and working with complex medical conditions. Combined with adapted equipment such as NuSteps or recumbent bikes, our programs are inviting, inclusive, and impactful. Adaptive Physical Education offers: • Group exercise and yoga classes in-person and via Zoom • Open-gym times for self-directed workouts in a supervised, safe environment • Specialty classes and programs as well as 1:1 personal training • Community social and educational programming Each week, we hold General Fitness classes (beginning and intermediate levels), 3 Yoga classes, and a Dance & Fitness class. We also offer Specialty Classes, including 4 classes for those with Parkinson's and/or other neuromuscular challenges and a Pulmonary Fitness & Maintenance program. We offer Open Gym times every weekday, when members drop in for a self-directed workout using our adapted equipment. Finally, we have specialty equipment including a Standing Frame and Biodex SD Balance System and personal training available 1:1. We also offer several community programs throughout the year, including Active Aging Week, Caregiver Compassion Training, and other social and educational events throughout the year. A long-time member shared what Adaptive Physical Education means to him: “They’re grrrreat! It’s not just ‘instruction’ … There is always a sense of camaraderie and supportive “family.” The value of this (on every level) is immeasurable, the instructors are tremendously knowledgeable, well informed, patient, and generous with their experience and kindness. The best! In 15 years, they’ve gotten me through some tough times and brought much happiness.” -- Mike A.
