Mission Statement

Through educational programming, MEI promotes the cultural, intellectual, and historical awareness of the Marshallese people and facilitates intercultural dialogue to foster positive social change.

About This Cause

The Marshallese Educational Initiative is a 510(c)(3) nonprofit established in Northwest Arkansas where the largest Marshallese population resides in the continental United States. MEI provides educational programming in the humanities to promote Marshallese history and culture, offers Marshallese language and culture classes, hosts events and programming to raise awareness about our shared nuclear legacy and the impact of climate change, and works to raise educational attainment levels through our holistic Marshallese Empowerment Through Education initiative. MEI works closely with youth and elder groups, and our Women's Advocacy Program increases access to justice for Marshallese female survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Given the disproportionate impact of coronavirus on the Marshallese community, we have shifted a significant amount of resources to relief and response efforts, namely: addressing food insecurity issues, educating the community about existing resources, paying utility bills when those resources are not available and broadening fundraising efforts to help pay for utilities, cleaning supplies, and food, and for additional expenses to handle relief efforts, and advocating to address systemic racial inequities.
