Mission Statement
The mission of Today is a Good Day (TIAGD) is to provide hope and build community through personal and financial support for families who experience the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
About This Cause
NICU families face sudden, unexpected personal and financial needs that are largely unrecognized, occur as a result of NICU admission and fall outside of the purview of hospitals or any other support structures to address. Today is a Good Day fills this gap by providing resources, connections, education and support to NICU families as they navigate this uncertain and unknown journey. Today is a Good Day's vision is that their NICU Family Support is the Standard of Care for all hospitals: All NICU families receive the personal and financial resources, expert guidance and vital connections they need to thrive during and beyond their NICU journey. The resulting hope makes all the difference. The programs that TIAGD provides includes the following: NICU Family Advocate (NFA) Before NICU-admitted families know what has happened or that they even need support, we are there to provide information, resources, connections and guidance, as needed, to ease the uncertainty and unavoidable trauma they face. The services offered are as varied as each NICU family but, by way of example, our NFAs have to date found car seats for last minute discharge, ensuring that the family can go home when scheduled; they have connected families to resources to help with homelessness, food deliveries from the community food bank, filling out food stamps forms, helping to find a volunteer to complete taxes, referring families to an organization to help with work attire, and much more. Kiosks TIAGD provides Kiosks in NICU Waiting Rooms across hospital partnerships. This enables families to learn of the services that TIAGD provides immediately. The Kiosks placed in the NICU provide this direct connection to information on each of TIAGD’s programs. NICU Care Packages The first touch point for NICU families, Care Packages let families know they are not alone. These include a beautiful canvas tote bag, personalized messaging, One Day at a Time Bracelets, Today Journal, On the Night You Were Born Book, KicKee Pants Swaddle Set, a Set of Bonding Squares (to help families bond with their infants through scent), Milestone/Resource cards, NICU family stories and other essentials such as water bottles and tissues. Navigate the NICU Sessions Navigate the NICU Sessions are delivered to families to provide hope and experienced guidance through important connections with families who have previously navigated the NICU. In-Kind Vital Need Support This in-kind financial support, accessed by families through the hospital social worker in conjunction with TIAGD, helps cover unexpected costs of living (rent, utilities, etc.), transportation-related fees, baby supplies (car seats, diapers, etc.) and meals for families. Breast Milk Coolers A new offering for NICU families, coolers allow NICU families to pump at home and bring breast milk to the hospital the next day for their baby, ensuring receipt of the nutrients desperately needed during this time. Thanksgiving Meals for NICU Families During the holidays, families who need to be by their baby’s side daily spend Thanksgiving in the NICU. The providing the meal on this important day, while seemingly a small gesture, has a large impact on an extended family and siblings, who are able to have some normalcy during this very trying time. Online Community Connections The TIAGD website provides many resources that support families on their NICU journey, including Testimonials, Stress Reduction Tools and the TIAGD blog and podcasts, including personal stories and conversations with medical experts. NICU Family Advocate Program Exit Resources One element of increasing focus on “beyond the NICU”, TIAGD provides families with a resource guide and connections to community resources available to them to smooth their transition to home post NICU. Preemie Milestone Shirts TIAGD developed gender-neutral clothing for nurses and doctors to give to parents when their baby is able to wear clothes for the first time. Lunch & Learns Held with hospital partner staff to present TIAGD programs, L&Ls give a better understanding of the organization, enabling staff to deliver programming with fidelity.
