Mission Statement
Our Mission: To assist schools in a rural district within Afghanistan with any needs they may have to provide quality education to students in this region. The organization will work with village chiefs, school administrators and government officials to identify needs and help students succeed in their educational endeavors.
About This Cause
Afghan Rural Schools is a Virginia-based non-profit 501c3 organization supporting three schools, one for girls and two for boys, in Khas Kunar, Kunar, Afghanistan. Established in 2014, ARS has so far provided electricity to the three schools and office of the Director of Education in the district. The girls' school was first on our list because, after years of meeting in the village mosque and a leased house, it had moved to a new building and having electricity on the top of its priority list. We included the Director's office because the local teachers had a meeting hall there. Since our organization was new and we did not have enough money to fund the project, most of the money came from my personal account. Some of the money was proceeds from the sales of my book entitled, One Life: An Afghan Remembers, available on www.amazon.com. Our next project, for which we need your support, is to build a flood barrier between the girls' high school and the nearby river in Khas Kunar, in order to prevent flood water during the rainy season from entering the school campus. We have a strong support in the community and the local engineers have designed the barrier to be built at the cost of about $20,000.00. We will also need your support for fulfilling my personal interest in helping schools in the area because when I graduated from the only elementary school in the district, I was the most fortunate among 35 of my classmates to go to Kabul and study in a high school on government expenses. At that time, the only secondary school in the whole province of Mashriqi was in Jalalabad. The province included the present provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar and Laghman. I got even luckier when I graduated from my high school and received three USAID scholarships to study at AUB (American University of Beirut) in Lebanon, and later at Columbia University in New York City, where I earned my Doctorate. A few years ago, I thought about helping those who were still in the area and not as fortunate as I had been and decided to establish Afghan Rural Schools. Please, feel free to visit our website, www.afghanruralschools.org, or contact us at our e-mail address, info@afghanruralschools.org, for more information or for you generous support. Our EIN is 46-3424470. We thank you in advance for your support and look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, A. Qayum Safi, Ed. D., President Afghan Rural Schools
