About This Cause

FOUNDATION MISSION The Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation is a public charitable organization dedicated to helping unlock the promise in every person through programs and events that advance civil and human rights; promote social, economic, and environmental justice; support health, wellness, and preparedness; and increase the joys of learning. FOUNDATION HISTORY On November 2, 1983, the Congress of the United States passed a veto-proof bill, signed by President Ronald Reagan, marking the third Monday of January as the official federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1985 the King family engaged Rev. Cecil Williams to establish the official organization to host Northern California’s annual birthday celebrations in honor of Dr. King. On December 28, 2009, Rev. Cecil Williams urged that a new leadership carry on the work fostered for nearly a quarter of a century. And, after discussions with local political, faith, labor, community, and business leaders, the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation was launched in the spring of 2010 to build on this great legacy and to further extend Dr. King's mission by helping people advance civil and human rights; promote social, economic, and environmental justice; support health, wellness, and preparedness; and increase the joys of learning. FOUNDATION GOAL The goal of the NorcalMLK Foundation is to help unlock the promise in every person by empowering the advancement of civil and human rights; promote social, economic, and environmental justice; support health, wellness, and preparedness; and increase the joys of learning. GOVERNANCE The Foundation is governed by a board of directors that constitutes a balanced mix of civic, business, labor, community, and faith leaders. FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES The Foundation represents a continuation of the nearly thirty-year legacy left by the Dr. King and local and regional leaders, and today, through new community and service programs and initiatives, touches thousands of individual lives throughout northern California. Our programs center around six core focus areas: 1. Realizing our promise by advancing civil and human rights 2. Bringing communities together by promoting social, economic, and environmental justice 3. Supporting underserved communities in health, wellness, and preparedness 4. Honoring the work of MLK through events and celebrations 5. Increasing the joys of learning through literacy, activity, and the arts 6. Making a difference by volunteering and serving in our communities. ORGANIZATIONAL FOCUS As non-profit organizations see calls for increased services, the NorcalMLK Foundation is continuing to find ways to more efficiently meet its mission. This includes developing innovative partnerships, fund development and outreach programs with business, civic, cultural, academic and interfaith enterprises. And, we actively look to grow long-term relationships with willing partners that can foster win-win solutions.
