Mission Statement
The Women’s Refugee Commission (WRC) is creating a better world for refugees. WRC catalyzes transformative change to protect and empower women, children, and youth displaced by conflict and crisis. Our mission is to improve the lives and protect the rights of women, children, youth, and other people who are often overlooked, undervalued, and underserved in humanitarian responses to displacement and crises. Our vision is a world where all people displaced by conflict or crisis are welcomed with dignity; are safe, healthy, and self-reliant; have their human rights and agency respected; and get the support and resources they need to rebuild their lives. We work in partnership with displaced communities to research their needs, identify solutions, and advocate for gender-transformative and sustained improvement in humanitarian, development, and displacement policy and practice. The Women’s Refugee Commission is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as we work to create a world where the dignity, equity, and self-determination of every person is respected.
About This Cause
WHO WE ARE The Women’s Refugee Commission improves humanitarian response for women, children and youth who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict or crisis by advocating that their specific needs to be part of the global humanitarian agenda. WHY WE DO IT Humanitarian assistance must provide opportunity. • Unprecedented numbers of people are currently displaced. Most live for an average of 20 years in transition, in refugee camps or on the margins of foreign cities. • For humanitarians to meet the modern, world-wide refugee crisis, programs must protect the most vulnerable refugees, recognize their human rights and assist them in their desire for self-sufficiency. OUR IMPACT The Women’s Refugee Commission's research and advocacy advances gender equality and resilience across humanitarian response. Our groundbreaking work has led to transformative changes in humanitarian programming. As a result, refugee women, children, and youth now have greater access to sexual and reproductive health care from the very onset of an emergency. They are more likely to find safe, dignified work. Marginalized individuals, including displaced people with disabilities, are included in more programs and in making decisions that affect their lives. Preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence is now on the international agenda. And families and children seeking asylum in the United States have a fearless advocate looking out for their best interests. The Women’s Refugee Commission also plays an important convening role. We partner with local and national organizations, humanitarian agencies, donors, and displaced persons to create a better world for refugees.
