Mission Statement
Our mission is to prevent suicide in the music community. We offer counseling, education, referrals, and other mental health services for musicians. We provide resources and outreach through our alcohol & drug-free, all-age spaces for rehearsal, multimedia, and community events.
About This Cause
The Boise Hive was founded in the Fall of 2013 by Gabriel Rudow and Jason Ringelstetter and became the first physical space in Idaho to offer a staffed, all-ages, sober music rehearsal facility, including referral services for mental health counseling and on-site group meetings. The merit of the Boise Hive was recognized in 2015 when it was named Boise’s “Best Recording Studio” by the Boise Weekly paper. By 2018, the Hive grew to host on-site mental health counseling and a variety of music programs and concert events serving the greater Boise community, utilizing a 100% volunteer staff donating more than 7,000 hours yearly. Two of our programs, focused on serving the underserved community of disabled veterans, grew from Hive volunteers who experienced a mental health benefit from the simple process of learning and playing music. Boise Hive ‘Jam It Out’ and ‘GI Jam‘ programs provide a community room stage for acoustic and electric jam sessions twice a week. The Boise Hive holds regular drum and recording workshops and occasional songwriting workshops. We recently gained multimedia experience by broadcasting live concerts to multiple online venues, featuring area musicians from all music genres twice a month, further spreading awareness of the Boise Hive’s available creative, musical, and mental health resources and expertise for the music community. The Hive’s mental health focus provides another access point for those suffering from mental illness. With artists cited as the 3rd highest profession for suicides (27.3 per 100k) and Idaho having the 5th highest suicide rate in the US (23.9 per 100k), this unique aspect of the Hive helps musicians pursue their art by tending to their mental health challenges as well as their musical skills. This further benefits the mental health of the community and our dedication to serving musicians and their particular needs
