Our mission centers on empowering Latino youth by fostering education advocacy, nurturing relationships, and building resilience. We envision a unified network within families, schools, and workplaces, that cultivates resilience and a sense of belonging, enabling Latino youth to flourish, learn, and emerge as leaders within our communities. Our approach intricately weaves civic engagement, culturally tailored programs, health initiatives, and education, aiming to create sustainable multigenerational pathways for positive impact.
About This Cause
Program: Mariposa Internship Program Description: The Mariposa Internship program is our high school and collegiate level internship program that offers a paid opportunity for aspiring youth and young adult leaders in SW Washington to gain invaluable skills and experience, while supporting their community. Through leadership training, and one - on - one mentoring, interns develop essential leadership qualities to enhance their skill set, support them along their educational and career paths, and further the mission of LLNW by investing in our future leaders. Program: Charlitas Program Description: The Charlitas Podcast is set to launch in February 2024! This student directed podcast is an extension of our former Charlas Facebook lives which was developed as a means to share resources and information to our Latino and Spanish speaking communities during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Designed by our Mariposa Interns and supported by our team, Charlitas offers a unique bilingual platform that caters to the interests of today's youth, making it the first of its kind in Southwest Washington. Each episode will focus on essential topics such as civic engagement, leadership development, health and wellness, career exploration, and more. Program: Annual Clark County Latino Youth Leadership Conference Program Description: Our annual leadership conference offers middle and high school students a platform to develop leadership skills and empowers them to explore higher education and technical career opportunities on a college campus. This conference also strives to unite Latino and BIPOC community leaders to come together and show our students we belong in these professional and academic spaces! This annual event is a testament to our communities dedication and commitment to uplifting the next generation of leaders, creating a safer and more equitable future. Program: Orugas a Mariposas Program Description: The Orugas a Mariposas: Youth Behavioral Health Pilot Program was launched in the summer of 2020, during the peak of the Covid-19 Pandemic. This initiative was designed by our dedicated Mariposa interns to address the pressing mental, emotional, and behavioral health concerns among Latino students in the SW Washington region. Collaborating closely with educators and community professionals, the Mariposas created a hybrid program strategically tailored to the mental, social, and emotional health needs of their peers. Program: Youth Civic Engagement w/ the City of Vancouver Program Description: The Youth Civic Engagement program, in partnership with the city of Vancouver, is designed to empower LatinX youth by providing invaluable experiences. Participants will engage with Vancouver City Council members at city hall, gaining insight into city boards, commissions, employment opportunities, and the functions of local government. Additionally, they'll contribute to the creation of a Youth City Council. LLNW and the City of Vancouver have targeted four high schools in the Evergreen and Vancouver school districts, recognizing their significant LatinX student populations, for participation in this impactful initiative including Evergreen HS, Heritage HS, Fort Vancouver HS for International Studies, and Hudson Bay HS. Program: Latino Leadership Day w/ Mill Plain Elementary School Program Description: In collaboration with Mill Plain Elementary School's dedicated social worker, Marissa Valencia-Mendez, LLNW is organizing a one-day leadership program. This initiative targets 5th grade students of color, particularly within the school's prominent Latino population, fostering an environment for learning, growth, connection, and leadership skill development. The program aims to enable these students to engage with influential LatinX Community Leaders, emphasizing the importance of Leading Social Change. By nurturing confidence, resilience, and responsibility, this initiative strives to cultivate the next generation of community leaders.
