Mission Statement
Galgos del Sol USA supports Galgos del Sol, a registered Spanish charity for the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of abandoned and injured Spanish hunting dogs and promotes the awareness of the treatment of the Galgo Espanol and their ability to be wonderful companions as well as educate the Spanish owners that there is an alternative of adoption rather than abandonment and killing.
About This Cause
The Galgo Español or Spanish greyhound is an ancient breed and a member of the sighthound family. Despite being called a “greyhound”, the Spanish Galgo is not closely related to the English or Irish Greyhound, the lineage of the two breeds being different. In ancient times the galgo was a prized possession, but currently they have become disposable “hunting tools”. Galgos are bred indiscriminately and used for a short recreational hunting season before the dogs are abandoned or killed in a variety of horrific methods. These loyal and affectionate dogs are not believed to be pet worthy in Spain. GDS believes galgos are an intergral part of Spanish legacy and deserve to be returned to a place of respect. Murcia, the area in which the Soleras reside, is a prolific hunting ground making the demands on GDS relentless. GDS has over 100 rescued galgos and podencos in their care and have relationships with organizations in Belgium, Denmark, the UK, and the USA for adoptions. GDS is committed to raising awareness through a variety of venues. It's not enough to rescue and rehome the galgos and podencos, they continuously get the word out with videos, billboard campaigns and school education programs. The newest effort is to build a headquarters for the GDS Education and Rescue Centre that will provide a place for the local community to learn about the galgos, their plight and what wonderful family members they make.
