Mission Statement

Listen First Project mends our frayed social fabric by building relationships and bridging divides. We combat the universally felt crisis of distance, division, and dehumanization across differences with conversations that prioritize understanding. To maximize impact, we catalyze the #ListenFirst movement powered by 300 partner organizations, thousands of individuals, National Conversation Project, businesses, schools, cultural influencers, and local chapters around the world. National Conversation Project is an overarching, collaborative platform that aggregates, aligns, and amplifies the efforts of all partners to mainstream conversations in which we #ListenFirst to understand. NCP promotes annual National Weeks of Conversation, #ListenFirst Fridays, Rapid Response & Featured Conversations on Major Issues, Locally-Focused #ListenFirst Movements, and any conversation creating social connection.

About This Cause

There is growing, even violent, division in communities across America. This polarizing trend is affecting society at large as well as workplaces, schools, and personal relationships—perhaps including your own. The problem is that increasingly in America today, we don't just disagree. We dislike, distrust, even despise those who see the world differently. We’re withdrawing from conversations—eroding relationships and understanding—fraying our social fabric. 75% of Americans say this problem has reached a crisis level. Experts say the solution is to cultivate more positive social connections. Thankfully, 75% of Americans are willing to practice conversations across divides, and 36%—more than 100 million people—want to see a national campaign to that end. Listen First Project is fueling that movement. We believe in the power of starting new conversations that move 'us vs. them' toward 'me and you’ to turn the tide of rising rancor and deepening division. Listen First Project creates opportunities and teaches skills for conversations that tip the scales toward a stronger and more equitable future for our nation and better relationships in our daily lives. We pursue this mission in multiple arenas. For society at large, we work to mend the frayed social fabric of America via an overarching collaborative platform called National Conversation Project that mainstreams conversations in which all #ListenFirst to understand. We’ve developed National Conversation Project to reach farther and impact greater than any one organization by aggregating, aligning, and amplifying the efforts of 300 #ListenFirst Coalition partners while welcoming more Americans into conversations. National Conversation Project promotes annual National Weeks of Conversation, #ListenFirst Fridays, Rapid Response & Featured Conversations on Major Issues, Locally-Focused #ListenFirst Movements, and any conversation creating social connection. We also recognize cultural influencers who join the movement as #ListenFirst Leaders. For workplaces, we train teams, assess individual/team listening styles, and recognize those who embody the mission as Listen First Businesses. For schools, we foster a new generation of #ListenFirst Leaders by supporting campus chapters, developing curriculum, and recognizing those who broadly integrate the practice as Listen First Schools/Districts. The Listen First mindset and skills also enhance our personal relationships—the leading edge of transforming culture. This burgeoning national movement has already reached millions of people with the #ListenFirst message—5 million during National Week of Conversation 2019 alone as 100+ organizations have adopted the common #ListenFirst message for mainstream scale. The movement has been recognized by journalists at CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, USA Today, the Associated Press and the New York Times, as well as many other national and local media. Most importantly, we’ve hosted and amplified hundreds of conversations across differences coast to coast. We invite you to consider supporting the #ListenFirst movement as a Sustaining Member of National Conversation Project, the overarching movement platform. LFP proudly recognizes individuals, nonprofits, and businesses who power this most-timely mission, and would love to recognize you.
