64TH STREET COMMUNITY GARDEN

BROOKLYN, New York, 11220-4419 United States

Mission Statement

The 64th St Community Garden was established in 1999, when a group of neighbors transformed a neighborhood dumping ground into an urban green space. The 64th Street Community Garden’s mission is to increase community access to an urban green space and to provide hands-on garden education for youth, community groups, and volunteers. In 2022, the garden is approximately 216 acres, containing numerous shrubs and fruit trees with sections dedicated to cultivating fresh food for the Sunset Park Community. The garden is divided into 3 areas: member raised beds, common spaces, and an educational garden area (managed by Center for Family Life and approximately 300 students from 7 schools in Sunset Park).

About This Cause

The 64th Street Community Garden is spearheading a beautification effort by replacing broken raised beds with new lumber, soil, and edible crops. Through this project, the group is maintaining an urban green space and providing free food to the community.
