Mission Statement
Dr. Angie’s Dental Health Exchange is a not-for-profit program that coordinates access to dental care for underserved populations by linking dental professionals with patients who earn treatment through community service.
About This Cause
A solution to access-to-care for adults who are unable to afford dental treatment when in pain or with infection. What makes our program unique is that participants earn dental care by paying-it-forward to help others our community. So far, most of our participants are employed, but have no benefits and cannot afford dental care. We have a volunteer board comprised of dental professionals, an attorney, a marketing specialist, a social outreach person, and an ER physician. We started with referrals from local emergency departments, and have now expanded to many service agencies, including elderly and veterans. Volunteer Dentists: provide donated services in their own offices with familiar equipment, staff, materials. We have enlisted the help of about 40 local dentists. A paid, part-time Coordinator: Enrolls patients, makes appointments, electronically charts and stores radiographs in a secure but easily accessed system donated by Patterson Dental Supply Low Income Adult Patients: After enrolled, educated, and received dental care supplies, earn dental care by completing 4 hours of community service for each dental treatment. Patients earn care which improves their overall health and self-respect. Our community: Benefits from volunteer services Local dental education students of IU South Bend and Ivy Tech participate in care and earn experiences. We have arranged for our participants to go to the schools for x-rays and dental cleanings at no cost. Saves costs for all: Reduces the burden on everyone for those unable to pay. Frees up emergency departments for more life threatened patients. Our five-year goals: -Reduce emergency department dental pain visits and repeat visits by 50 to 75% -Encourage and provide preventive care.
