Mission Statement

Project Alianza’s mission is to break the cycle of generational poverty through education, helping children develop skills and realize their potential for lifelong success.

About This Cause

THE CHALLENGE Millions of children in rural Latin America go to school in dilapidated buildings miles away from home. Often, single rooms with mud floors house students from different grades. Undertrained teachers lack basic teaching supplies. Many children live and study under constant threat from violence. As a result, three out four fourth-graders in Central America regions where Project Alianza works cannot read a single sentence. More than half of children drop out of primary school. PROJECT ALIANZA’S SOLUTION Project Alianza hires and trains local women as educators to help children learn and stay in school. Working alongside public school teachers and after school, these community educators teach children how to read using the proven, groundbreaking method known as Teach-at-the-Right-Level. This approach tests children on the basics using simple tools, groups children based on ability and not age, and focuses on basic skills adapted to their current level. Instruction is coupled with personal growth and enrichment activities centered on gender equity, life skills, and health practices. Project Alianza also promotes learning at home. It partners with local radio stations to broadcast pre-recorded literacy lessons. These guide children and their caregivers on a series of hands-on literacy exercises completed in workbooks. Project Alianza collects these workbooks to assess learning. This innovative program, piloted in 2020, has reached more than 39,000 listeners as of late 2022. To keep children from dropping out of schools, Project Alianza grants their families cash assistance to help cover education costs such as supplies and transportation. These “direct cash transfers” also allow families to use more of their income for basic needs such as food and housing. Lastly, in regions lacking safe, accessible schools, Project Alianza builds schools in land donated by local coffee growers. Area residents are involved in every step, from planning to construction. Residents from the surrounding community also help maintain the schools once they’re up and running.
