Mission Statement
MISSION—Sefaria will revolutionize Jewish learning and enhance Jewish literacy and engagement by building a free and universally accessible living library of Jewish texts and their interconnections, in Hebrew and in translation. What is a living library? A library that evolves, grows and interacts with its users, creating a space for conversation among a community of people who thrive on learning and sharing. HISTORY—In 2010, best-selling author Joshua Foer and former Google engineer Brett Lockspeiser set out to create Sefaria as a way to remove barriers of engagement with Jewish texts and to transform the experience of Jewish learning. The team set out to build the first comprehensive, multilingual, interactive website of all Jewish texts. In the summer of 2013, they publically launched Sefaria and hired Daniel Septimus as the Executive Director to oversee the organization as it continued building its groundbreaking technology, acquired more texts and developed its community of consumers and prosumers.
About This Cause
Before the Internet came the printing press. Before the printing press, there were handwritten scrolls. Before that, we relied on oral traditions passed down from teacher to student. Each new medium democratized knowledge further, bringing more and more people into the great conversations of Jewish learning. We are the generation charged with shepherding the Torah online — bringing it from print to digital — in a way that can expand its reach and impact. Sefaria will give Jewish texts the beautiful interface they deserve while building an open source, digital infrastructure for the future of Jewish learning. Our vision: Access—No Jewish source will be more than a click away Conversation—Unified home for Jewish commentary and publishing Education—A playground for discovery for the entire Jewish community and a resource for interactive teaching and learning for Jewish day schools and yeshivas around the world Infrastructure—Platform for computer-assisted research and educational applications To achieve our vision, we will spend the next two years building Sefaria’s library of texts and commentaries, and the platform for Jewish education, conversation, commentary and publishing. The next two years: *Expand Sefaria’s library: complete canon in Hebrew/Aramaic and add translations *Build a visually-appealing, interactive user interface *Design an intuitive, mobile experience for navigating the complete Jewish canon *Develop a social platform that enables deep conversation and learning *Complete in-depth classroom usability case studies *Collect feedback from 100 Jewish educators *Begin integrating Sefaria in day school classrooms *Support the development of third-party educational applications The completion of these goals will enable the intellectually curious to explore their textual heritage, teachers to create educational materials at the click of a button, students of all background to explore and engage deeply with hundreds of text, and scholars to share their new insights and teachings.
