Mission Statement
ReMerge's mission is to restore mothers and families through a comprehensive diversion program of treatment, recovery, and hope.
About This Cause
Oklahoma has incarcerated more women per capita than anywhere else in the world for nearly three decades. For far too long, we have incarcerated women that truly needed treatment options. This has led to the separation of families, and additional family trauma. The good news is, there's a better way. For around the same annual cost of incarceration, ReMerge is able to provide comprehensive services that result in lower recidivism, higher rates of family reunification, and long-term success within the community. ReMerge is a gender-responsive, trauma-informed, strengths-based program that keeps women in the community and out of prison, offering life-changing opportunity for them and their families. We currently serve up to 55 moms at a time. We provide for basic needs including clothing; housing; transportation; access to medical and dental care, as well as providing trauma-informed treatment for mental health and substance abuse; parenting classes; financial literacy; health and wellness education; educational and employment assistance that includes GED tutoring, resume assistance, and more. While there are common themes of childhood trauma, domestic violence, and family cycles of addiction and poverty for most of the women in our program, we understand that they are each individuals with unique needs and are equipped to customize the program to meet those needs. Each of our ReMerge mothers is assigned to a team that includes a Therapist, a Care Coordinator, and a Peer Recovery Support Specialist. This team helps to support each mom, coordinate services, and ensure that she is making progress toward accomplishing her goals and completing the program. Upon graduation, eligible participants' charges are dismissed. After graduation from our program, moms are encouraged to stay connected through our Continuing Care program. Graduates have access to services such as education and employment and our full-time Legal Aid attorney as well as monthly, peer-led support group meetings, an annual reunion, and flex funds available for moms that have an unforeseen experience and might need additional momentary support. ReMerge is a four phase program that last between 18 and 24 months. Phase One focuses on assessment and stabilization and includes an individualized treatment plan to address basic needs, family dynamics, treatment needs, and an education and employment plan. Phase Two deals with treatment and education, increasing stability and looking toward future employment goals. Reunification with children can begin in Phase Two. Phase Three provides an opportunity for the women to practice and demonstrate recovery skills, accept leadership roles within the program, and maintain sobriety. Phase Four prepares the mothers for independence, self-sufficiency, and lifelong sobriety. Typically, in Phase Four, mothers are reunited with their children and are working full-time and/or are in school pursuing a degree. In June 2020, 10 mothers with 25 children graduated the program, bringing our total graduates to 136 mothers and impacting the lives of 341 children! We are requesting general operating support so that we have the flexibility to best serve the mothers in our program. Our budget allows for us to individualize our programming as necessary and truly be comprehensive.
