Mission Statement
The Friendship Circle is one of today’s fastest growing organizations for children and adults with special needs. The Friendship Circle has cultivated friendships between more than 100 special children, adults and close to 300 volunteers. The Friendship Circle’s unique approach brings together teenage volunteers and children and adults with special needs for hours of fun and friendship. These shared experiences empower the children, adult clients, our special friends, while enriching the lives of everyone involved.
About This Cause
The Friendship Circle of Houston was established in 2004 with the goal of bringing friends and smiles to children and adults with special needs and peace of mind to their parents; to foster the values of volunteerism and compassion among our youth; and to ultimately realize the community’s responsibility for its members with special needs. The Friendship Circle (FC) aims to create a special-needs friendly community by building education and awareness through our volunteer programs and school curriculum. From our annual community wide Friendship Walk, to our educational workshops for schools and youth groups throughout the greater Houston area, Friendship Circle continues to advocate friendship and inclusion for all. The Friendship Circle program is now entering its twelfth year, and while there is still so much to be done, we are proud that each year the organization and success of the program has increased. Mission Founded on the belief of love your fellow as yourself, The Friendship Circle is dedicated to creating a supportive community for special needs children and adults, their families and high school volunteers, giving them the opportunity to unearth their potential, make positive life choices, and realize their dreams. Vision Imagine a world where people young and old live apart from society, isolated from others, without friends – without that vital connection of laughter, shared moments, and comfort, just because they are “different.” Now picture the reverse. Visualize a community transformed—a group that recognizes the common thread that runs through each of us, regardless of age, ethnicity, background, etc. By reaching past ourselves and into the lives of others, we find meaning, purpose, and love. The Friendship Circle brings that vision alive. It extends a helping hand to both adults with special needs and families who have children with special needs and involves them in a full range of unique social experiences. By tapping into the idealism and energy of our teen volunteers and the selfless giving our our adult volunteer corps, the Friendship Circle nurtures a sense of compassion and nurtures a new generation of communal leaders.
