Mission Statement

Providing physical, spiritual, emotional, and social support to families experiencing disability. The Mercy Center is the single physical therapy center of its kind within a two-hour drive of Jalapa Nicaragua. Each week, our staff sees kids at no cost to families. Each child attends along with a caregiver. During their time at the center, children participate in different programs: Physical therapy: our physical therapists Nitza and Leslye focus on the physical rehabilitation of our children. They facilitate training for caregivers so therapy can continue in our children’s homes. Medical care: our team coordinates medical care for kids from medication to appointments to scans and testing. Stimulation: our staff provides physical stimulation to children that are developmentally atypical. Education: because the majority of our kids cannot attend school, our full-time teacher Maria provides the only educational resources available to them. Kids who are able can attend a local private school with the assistance of Mercy Center aides who help facilitate a safe learning environment. Our education program is the only integrated program of its kind in Jalapa. Health Plan: Our team seeks to improve the quality of life for kids through health education on topics ranging from how the digestive system works to what a balanced diet looks like. Children and their families receive free transportation to and from the center as well as a meal, often the best quality meal kids receive all week. Additionally, our staff remains on-call in case of a medical crisis.

What We Do This work is carried out primarily through The Mercy Center in Nicaragua, the only physical therapy and support center of its kind within a two-hour drive radius. The space exists to create a holistically healthy environment for kids with disabilities by providing physical therapy as well opportunities for community and health and wellness education. The team in Nicaragua furthers our vision of holistic wellness through Mercy Medical, a program through which we provide access to medical intervention in Nicaragua. Local medical teams provide services from feeding tubes to neurological evaluations to clubfoot procedures to dental care. In order to promote inclusion, Mercy Connects provides opportunities for kids who have not been able to attend school to receive an education through a local school system. Furthermore, at the Mercy Center, children and families receive education on healthy eating, hygiene, and other essential life skills. Through Mercy Send, we find children who cannot be treated in Nicaragua and send them internationally to receive life changing surgeries or procedures. We partner with different organizations around the globe to facilitate the best option available for each child’s specific need. Who we Serve All of our participants come from low-income families that do not have access to other healthcare. Our children experience a variety of disabilities from microcephaly to cerebral palsy to Down syndrome.
