Mission Statement
Victor Herbert Renaissance Project LIVE! is the first producing organization in America (and the world) to be devoted solely to the output of Irish American composer Victor Herbert (1859-1924). Its mission is to reintroduce the massive collection of music and theatrical output by Herbert to the American public in general and to music and theatrical students of all ages and levels. Victor Herbert Renaissance Project LIVE! (“VHRP LIVE!”) is a six year old non-profit production company dedicated to Irish American composer Victor Herbert. This composer is the major foundation of the American World of Entertainment from 1890s to 1924 and has long been neglected. His composing output comprises 45 Broadway operettas and musical comedies, the first American Grand Opera, the first American original film score, 10 to 15 compositions for full classical orchestral, a resident Ziegfeld Follies composer from 1917 until 1924 as well as hundreds of popular songs for voice and piano. He also was the only American theatrical composer to orchestrate his own work – a fact that remains true through today. Herbert was a successful conductor of Gilmore’s NY 22nd Regiment Band from 1893 to 1899; conductor of the Pittsburgh Orchestra from 1898 to 1906; and the conductor of the Victor Herbert Orchestra from 1906 to 1924. In addition, he was the primary founder of the American Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers (“ASCAP” in 1914), primary lobbyist (1903 to 1909) for the 1909 Copyright Bill that granted composers mechanical (“recording”) rights and a champion of American composers. In many ways, the beginnings of what we know today as the American Entertainment industry was shaped initially by Victor Herbert serving as a profound influence on the young Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin and even George Gershwin. In short, Herbert is an American Musical Giant. A first production of this group of individuals prior to incorporation was a two night performance of Victor Herbert’s Cyrano de Bergerac given in November of 2013. We had hoped to be incorporated by then, but the process of finding a Volunteer Lawyers for Arts attorney was not achieved until late December of 2013. Thus, the work was produced by the For Profit Publishing company, VHSource LLC, owned by Alyce Mott, Publisher. All revenues were reported on that company’s 2013 IRS Tax Report.
