Mission Statement

Feed Northland Kids exists for the sole purpose of feeding children in Clay and Platte Counties, in Missouri.

About This Cause

Feed Northland Kids formed in the summer of 2009 after a need assessment for our area indicated a large number of hungry children. We've been feeding kids in two ways. For the elementary-aged students, we partner with Harvesters, the community food network, to underwrite and expand their existing BackSnack program. A BackSnack is a 4-lb packet of shelf stable food, containing about 5 meals and a few snacks. It is designed to take the place of the breakfast and lunch many of these children receive at school during the weekdays. The children pick the BackSnacks up on Friday to ensure they have proper nutrition for the weekend. When we began this partnership, 600 children were in the program. Currently, we are feeding 1,600 children! We learned that hunger often follows children when they leave elementary school, so two years ago we began opening pantries inside middle and high schools. This has proven to be an effective way to subtly and consistently supply food to these age children. Currently, 17 pantries are operating, seven in the Park Hill School District, four in the NKC School District, five in the Liberty School District and one in the Smithville School District. Our plan is to add two or three pantries each year until all schools who indicate a desire and need, have one in place.
