About This Cause

NAMI Western Nevada is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals, families and communities impacted by mental illness through education, support, advocacy and awareness. We primarily serve the communities of 12 rural and frontier counties in Nevada. Our programs are offered at no cost to participants to our communities in order to provide much needed support to those living with mental illnesses, as well as their families and friends. These programs include: • Family-to-Family Education Class: an 8-week course for families and friends of adults living with mental illness; • NAMI Basics Education Class: a 6-week course for families and caregivers of children living with mental illness or behavioral issues; • NAMI Connection Recovery Support: a support group for adults living with mental illness focused on the principles of support; • Family Support Group: a support group for family members or caregivers of individuals living with mental illness; • Ending the Silence: an education program for middle and high schoolers focused on break down stigma around mental illness and promoted mental health that also has a version for parents and teachers; and • NAMI Provider: a staff development program led by a person in recovery, a family member, and a mental health provider for health care organizations working directly with people affected by mental illness. NAMI Western Nevada participates in local Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) offered primarily to law enforcement agencies and other community members. We play a key role in coordinating peer and family panels at these trainings to allow individuals and family members to share their stories that provide valuable and unique perspectives of lived experience with mental illness. We offer several peer programs specific to our agency, which begin with the Nevada Warmline that was introduced in 2019. The Nevada Warmline is a stigma-free, non-crisis phone service that members of the community can call to speak one-on-one with a trained Peer Wellness Operator. The Warmline is staffed by trained peers in recovery who provide support by telephone. The Warmline costs an average of $36 per call versus an average emergency room visit at a cost of $922, saving money for our consumers and our community taxpayers. The Nevada Warmline is operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. In early 2022, the Nevada Warmline expanded to serve our youth by adding the Nevada Teen Peer Support Text Line that was launched on May 16, 2022. The Teen Text Line serves adolescents and young adults through one-on-one peer support by text message with trained young adult Peer Wellness Operators who can connect with participants through shared lived experience. On November 1, 2023, the Teen Text Line expanded to have an online chat feature through NAMI Western Nevada’s website to increase equity in access for youth with limited access to phones with texting services. The Nevada Teen Text Line and Online Chat are open 7am to midnight 7 days a week and 365 days per year to provide support to youth impacted by mental illness or life stressors. An additional peer support program unique to NAMI Western Nevada is our Nevada Caring Contacts program which is a specialized branch of both the Nevada Warmline and the Nevada Teen Text Line. This program was selected as one of ten winners of SAMHSA’s Recovery Innovation Challenge among over 350 submissions across the nation in 2022. The Nevada Caring Contacts program is peer-built, peer-led, and peer-delivered. This program is an innovation in hospital and suicide prevention and postvention that provides peer support for follow-up care, bridging the gap between identification of a crisis or suicidality and stabilization. Nevada Caring Contacts provides person-centered peer support that is available to all Nevadans to reduce the use of higher levels of care, suicide attempts, and loss of lives due to death by suicide. It is important to share with you all our accomplishments and ongoing efforts to explain why a donation to NAMI Western Nevada will be so vital to our community. Support from our community members in the form of donations allows us to continue our work in providing education, support, advocacy, and community awareness for mental health.
