Mission Statement
After the Harvest works to fight hunger, improve nutrition and reduce food waste by rescuing fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste in the local landfill and distributing it to organizations that feed hungry people. With the help of volunteers, we glean fresh fruits and vegetables from regional farms, farmers' markets, orchards and produce distribution hubs. We also secure truckloads of donated produce from large commercial producers and brokers across the country. The produce is distributed to food banks and feeding agencies in Missouri and Kansas.
About This Cause
After the Harvest (ATH) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting hunger, improving nutrition and reducing food waste by rescuing wholesome, nutritious, yet unmarketable produce and distributing it to agencies and food banks that serve people in need. Founded in May of 2014 in Kansas City, ATH provides a simple yet profound way to feed people year-round by saving fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste in the local landfill and getting it to people who would otherwise go hungry. We do this by targeting the two main points of large-volume food waste: (1) farmers’ fields and orchards after the harvest, and (2) packing operations where produce is prepared for shipping to markets. In 2022, ATH provided more than 2.5 million pounds of fresh produce to food banks and feeding agencies in Missouri and Kansas, primarily in Greater Kansas City. Since inception, ATH has provided more than 32 million pounds of fresh produce for hungry people in the Kansas City region. Mission Driven: We work together based on our shared belief that no one should be hungry and no healthy food should be wasted. Dignity: We believe everyone has a fundamental right to healthy food. Hunger is unacceptable. Environmental Sustainability: We believe in common-sense solutions to ending hunger that are sustainable – locally, socially, economically, and environmentally. Diversity: We aspire to create an inclusive environment that embraces the diversity of individuals, thoughts, and viewpoints. Collaboration: We believe collaboration is the only way to end hunger and food waste. Integrity: We believe in being transparent and trustworthy. We are committed to ethical and professional accountability in the management of our operations, resources, and relationships. After the Harvest plays a critical role in the local landscape of healthy eating and active living. Often farm-fresh, our produce donations have a longer shelf life than other produce donations. We are committed to forging a myriad of multi-sector partnerships to help achieve equitable access to healthy food in our community.
