Our mission is to share God’s love as we facilitate Christ-centered education, community development, economic opportunity, and health initiatives in rural Liberia.
About This Cause
From 1989 to 2003, Liberia suffered through a brutal civil war that killed hundreds of thousands of residents and destroyed many of the schools throughout the country. Of its 5.5 million inhabitants, about half are age 18 and younger yet only one-third are enrolled in school. The country suffers from lack of basic infrastructure, poor access to sanitation and clean water, and extreme poverty. According to The World Bank, 80% of the rural Liberians live in poverty. UNESCO data indicates the literacy rate for adults (age 25-64) is around 46% which globally ranks Liberia 147 of 152 countries. Working in cooperation with churches and other Christian organizations, community groups, and residents surrounding the city of Gbarnga, Bong County, we are designing and constructing a school campus on an 18-acre site to provide primary, secondary, and vocational training. Our school campus is called the Gbarnga Lutheran Training Center. Classes started in March 2017 with 40 students from the local village of Deanville. Current enrollment is almost 250 with classes ranging from Daycare through Grade 7. All students and staff receive a meal each day with much of the produce being harvested from our own gardens. Vocational training classes are offered free of charge in soap making, tailoring, baking, and agriculture. Nearly 80 adults are enrolled along with the older day students participating in vocational education as well. Students with limited financial means are offered scholarships and other assistance such as books, school supplies, and school uniforms. Community programs address needs such as clean water, sanitation, hygiene, nutrition and other inequities of poverty that are barriers to a child's education. Hand pump well have been installed or rehabilitated throughout the community to improve health.
