Mission Statement
While ministering to the homeless on the streets of Omaha, Nebraska, Father Edward Joseph Flanagan developed a lifelong interest in young people and their struggle to grow into responsible, productive members of society. Today, with your help, we continue Father Flanagan's mission of saving children and healing families. At Boys Town, we provide an array of life-changing youth care and health care services that meet each child and family exactly where they are so they get the right kind of care, at the right time, in the right way. Whether caring for a child in crisis, treating complex health care conditions or helping families find the parenting resources they need, Boys Town is here for you and your family with expert, compassionate care and a proven track record of helping children and families heal and grow in mind, body and spirit.
About This Cause
Regardless of a person's background, race, or religion, Boys Town believes that everyone deserves the chance to reach their full potential. For 100 years, Boys Town has helped thousands of children and families. We don’t give up on kids and are committed to helping those who have failed in other systems. We do this by working to keep children and families safe, in their homes, in school, and out of the system. We give them the second chances they deserve. And we see the success of this work every day. Boys Town believes that children should be treated as children, especially when they violate the law and enter the juvenile justice system. We believe in rehabilitation and redemption for kids, rather than punishment and incarceration, and advocate for fair treatment and practices that take into consideration a child’s age, developmental level and lack of decision-making abilities. Given the right interventions and support, no child is beyond hope. Boys Town has earned four stars from Charity Navigator five years running, a recognition earned by only 4 percent of U.S. nonprofits so consistently. We are also accredited by the Better Business Bureau. Boys Town delivers an Integrated Continuum of Care for struggling children and families nationwide. We employ a well-defined model that is backed by over 100 years of experience and modern, cutting-edge research. We are uniquely qualified to deliver the right care at the right time – and to do so more effectively and cost-efficiently. Our care services range from crisis interventions to more preventative solutions. As families progress, they step down the Continuum, where less-intensive services help solidify their gains. If they falter, they step up the Continuum, where rapid interventions can resolve crises and get them back on track. By linking these services, Boys Town addresses the entire family’s problems in a holistic way. Our ultimate goal is to ensure the safety, stability, and well-being of children and families. Regardless of their circumstances, all children deserve nothing less. OUR HISTORY For almost 100 years now, Boys Town has held true to the words of our founder, Father Edward Flanagan: “There are no bad boys. There is only bad environment, bad training, bad example, bad thinking.” In 1917 he opened a home for wayward boys in Omaha, Nebraska, and from the start, his approach was a revelation. Unlike many orphanages or work farms of his day, Father Flanagan’s home focused on academic achievement, the development of marketable skills, and teaching leadership through self-government. Inspired by Father Flanagan’s vision and values, Boys Town has continuously innovated to meet the changing needs of America’s children and families. Since the 1970s, through our applied research and performance analytics, we have developed and refined an effective model and replicated it across the country. Today, at 11 sites nationwide, the Boys Town Model: – Teaches life-changing skills to children – both boys and girls – and their families. – Helps children and families build healthy relationships. – Empowers children and families to make good decisions on their own. – Cares for children in a family-style environment. – Supports children and families in religious practices and values. In recent years, Boys Town has increasingly focused on preventative services. We have taken lessons learned from our residential programs and implemented them in the community, reaching into the neighborhoods, schools, and homes where America’s families are fighting for self-reliance. OUR SERVICES At sites across the country, Boys Town’s Continuum of Care includes the following services: – Residential Family Homes care for children who have been abused, neglected, or otherwise determined to be unsafe in their own homes. – In-Home Family Services is a preventative approach to identifying and solving problems before families break apart. – Through Foster Family Services, we train and support foster parents as they care for abused or neglected children. – Behavioral Health Clinics deliver an evidence-based treatment for children and teens suffering from behavioral disorders. – Through Common Sense Parenting classes, parents from all walks of life learn practical, step-by-step techniques for balancing affection with discipline and building stronger family bonds. Additionally, Boys Town helps children and families everywhere through a national crisis line, online resources, and publications: The Boys Town National Hotline provides teens and their parents with free crisis counseling and connections to resources in their own local communities. The Hotline operates 24/7, year-round. Trained counselors are available through a toll-free number, e-mail, private online messaging, or even mobile text. Teens and young adults also get advice through Boys Town’s “Your Life, Your Voice” website, where they anonymously share their stories with peers, ask questions, and read responses from trained youth counselors. The Boys Town Press publishes books, pamphlets, and posters for parents, educators, youth care professionals, and children of all ages. The popular Common Sense Parenting series, including books and DVDs, helps parents develop new skills for raising well-behaved children with character.
