Mission Statement

The Edgerton Education Foundation (aka Edgerton Explorit Center) is Nebraska's Hands On Science Center. We exist to instill in people of all ages the joy of scientific discovery through hands on exploration.

About This Cause

The Edgerton Education Foundation (aka Edgerton Explorit Center) was established in 1995. The center is named after Harold “Doc” Edgerton, a native of Aurora known internationally for developing electronic flash photography, the strobe light and side scan sonar. Edgerton had a distinguished career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Edgerton developed a long and deep friendship with Jacques Costeau and a lifelong relationship with the National Geographic Society which awarded him 22 research grants, the most awarded to any researcher. The center features three primary exploration areas: The Explorit Zone, The Theatre, and Strobe Alley. Explorit Zone The Explorit Zone is filled with many interactive exhibits that continually change and are designed to provide insight into various scientific principles and phenomena. Explore over $180,000 worth of new exhibits including a flight simulator, mars rover, interactive projection system, plasma wall, and giant bubble tubes and much, much more. The Theatre Visitors of all ages become fascinated with the world of science while experiencing interactive science presentations demonstrated by the Edgerton Center’s lead educators. Demonstrations include an Arctic Blast, Amazing Bubbles, Stopping Time, Sparks, Good Vibrations, Astronomy Anywhere, PSI and Go Show. The theatre is open for bus and group tours and during special events. Strobe Alley & more Strobe Alley features the life and work of Harold “Doc” Edgerton. The alley is the home of Edgerton’s historic photographs, including the famous “milk drop” photo and the “bullet passing through an apple,” as well as his laboratory equipment and information about his work at MIT and explorations with Jacques Cousteau. The center’s traveling science program, Edgerton On The Move, travels to special events and schools throughout the state. The traveling program helps the center reach more than 200,000 students, teachers and individuals annually across Nebraska at schools, organizations and festivals. The center also provides extensive summer camp programs. Bus and group tours and special overnight visits are available. Tours include live demonstrations with our educators.
