Mission Statement
The IITKGP Foundation is a non-profit organization devoted to enhancing the capability of the Indian Institute of Technology ("IIT"), Kharagpur. It's primary objective is to raise funds for the Institute, primarily from alumni based in the US and Canada. The IITKGP Foundation is registered as a non-profit organization with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. All contributions to the IITKGP Foundation are tax-deductible for U.S. taxpayers.
About This Cause
IIT Kharagpur was the brainchild of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. After India gained its freedom from the British Empire, Mr. Nehru had a vision that if India was to progress it needed to develop engineering colleges of higher learning. His desire when setting up the IIT schools was to attract the best students in India and train them to become the future leaders. The first stone of IIT Kharagpur was placed in 1952 and they graduated their first group of bachelor degree students in 1956. Since then, IIT Kharagpur has graduated over 100,000 students in bachelors, masters, and PhD programs. Many of these students have gone on to be leading public servants in the roles of chief minister, ministers, and senior bureaucrats. There have also been a large number of students that went on to lead global companies, including Sundar Pichai (CEO of Google), Arun Sarin (CEO of Vodafone), and entrepreneurs like Arjun Molhotra, Ron Gupta, Asoke Deysarkar, Vinod Gupta, Mani Bhaumik, Suhas Patil and hundreds more. The mission of the IITKGP Foundation is to connect the alumni in the US and Canada, who number nearly 10,000, with their alma mater. They will stay connected by being informed of what’s happening and the progress being made at their beloved institute. This connection will also take place by aiding in the development and improvement of IIT Kharagpur by the donation of funds to help with various needs on campus that may not be covered by government subsidies. The alumni have tremendous love for IIT Kharagpur and it’s our purpose to facilitate and enhance connection and devotion to their alma mater.
